Yale University Joins Amicus Brief Supporting a Work Program for International Students

Key Takeaways:

  • Yale University joins 150 other US colleges and universities in an amicus brief supporting a work program for international students
  • Optional Practical Training (OPT) gives students a global edge in their careers
  • 800 international students in Yale joined the OPT in the Fall 2019 term

Yale University and 150 other US institutions have joined an amicus brief supporting international students gaining work experience outside of their classroom. The brief was filed on June 21, 2021 in the US Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit in litigation titled “Washington Alliance of Technology Workers v. US Department of Homeland Security,” filed in support of continuing Optional Practical Training (OPT).

As mentioned, this is a federal program that provides temporary employment authorization to graduate and undergraduate students with F-1 visa status to gain practical training beyond their coursework. OPT has untold benefits for international students. This brief will give them a global edge as they finish and face the real world.

According to NAFSA, 223,539 international students contributed approximately $38.7 billion to the US economy during 2019–2020. As of the Fall 2019 term, 3,014 students from 120 countries enrolled at Yale comprise 22% of the university’s total enrollment population. To date, over 800 foreign students have joined the F-1 OPT program in the Fall term.
