CAEL test types

The primary CAEL test types are as follows:

CAEL CE (Computer edition)

The CAEL CE is a computer-based test where all sections of the test (Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking) are administered on a computer. Test-takers use a computer to read passages, listen to audio recordings, type their written responses, and record their spoken responses for the speaking section.

CAEL CI (Integrated)

The CAEL CI (Integrated) test is a combination of computer-delivered and face-to-face components. In this format, the Reading and Listening sections are taken on a computer, similar to the CAEL CE. However, the speaking section is conducted in person, face-to-face, with an interviewer or rater. Test-takers respond to speaking prompts given by the interviewer, and their responses are assessed based on language proficiency and communication skills.

Both types of CAEL tests evaluate language proficiency in an academic context and assess the ability to understand and use English in various academic tasks. The content and difficulty level of the test is the same for both formats. Test-takers can choose the test type that best suits their preferences or the availability of test centers in their region.
