What Are Non-Traditional Students and Non-Traditional Scholarships?

How To Get a Full Scholarship as an International Student

What are Non-Traditional Students?

When you think of college students, you probably think of adults between 18 to 22 who attend undergraduate classes. This is the usual type of college student. But this does not include all those that attend college. A student falls into the “non-traditional” criteria if he or she does not fit the exact definition. Non-traditional students include students who are:

  • Studying abroad
  • Returnees
  • Adults who will attend school for the first time
  • Single parents
  • Pursuing a niche major
  • Of certain ethnic groups
  • Attending graduate school

Everyone who does not belong in the usual trope of being a college student is a non-traditional student.

What are Non-Traditional Scholarships?

You have probably heard about lots of scholarships that are based on merit, grades, athletics, or financial need, but there is one missing. If there are non-traditional students, there are also “non-traditional” scholarships. These may be difficult to look for but it is possible. Usually, these scholarships are strict to the requirements on who can apply. Some of them are the following:

The Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund

This scholarship is designed for single parents who have at least 50% physical custody of their child along with specific household income, among others.

The Walmart Associate Scholarship

If you are an adult looking for a way to return to college for the first time or career advancement, this financial aid will be willing to help you out. However, a major requirement is that you must be employed by Walmart. Also, a big factor is your need for financial assistance.

The Betty Barrick Non-Traditional Student Scholarship

To be qualified to apply here, you must be taking a major in the field of agriculture or natural resources as well as an age requirement of at least 25 years old.

If you are already stressing about finding the right scholarship for you, maybe you can find it in a non-traditional one. Research about them on websites or ask your local governing body or your counselors if they know one. Look into the scholarship’s scope and details. Just make sure that you are eligible to apply. It may be unusual to be awarded a non-traditional scholarship, but you need to remember that it is still a scholarship and will help you with school finances.
