UK Government Opens Chevening Scholarships for Indian Students scaled 1

Indian students keen to pursue master’s degree programmes in the UK have an opportunity to apply for the prestigious Chevening Scholarships 2021-22 announced on Aug. 3.

These are sponsored by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and its partner organisations. Selected students will be awarded scholarships to study in the country for one year on a completely funded master’s degree course.

Aside from the waiver on the tuition fee, successful candidates get to experience quality education at top UK universities, get special chances to network, and also an opportunity to discover the country’s diverse culture.

The international scholarship scheme has been churning out potential global leaders since 1983, with an alumni group of over 50,000.

Scholarship winners get full tuition fees, the cost of one visa application, an arrival allowance, a monthly stipend, a homeward departure allowance, a travel grant to attend Chevening events in the UK, and to and fro travel costs.

An applicant needs to have at least two years of work experience. He/she must also apply to three eligible UK university programmes and should have received an unconditional offer from one of these by July 14, 2022. The candidate must also return to his/her country of citizenship for a minimum of two years after the scholarship ends.

Completing an undergraduate degree is also a must for getting onto a postgraduate programme at a UK university.

The courses chosen should be full-time, must start in September/October and need to be taught master’s (i.e. not research-focused master’s in research programmes).

The application deadline is Nov. 2, 2021, after which applications will be sifted based on eligibility criteria. Independent reading committees will evaluate all eligible applications and then share their assessment with local British Embassies or High Commissions. This process will be conducted from mid-November to December 2021.

From early to mid-February 2022, applicants will be shortlisted for interviews and from February to April 2022, shortlisted candidates will be required to submit two references and their education documents before their interview date. Results will be declared in June 2022.

One of the largest scholarship schemes globally, Chevening India offers up to 65 fully paid scholarships and 65 fully paid fellowships each year.

Applicants from India can choose any course of study, including foreign policy, climate change, defence, security, urban development, research, innovation, trade and investment, and economic reforms.

The English language requirement was done away with in 2020. However, it is mandatory to meet all criteria from the chosen university and have an unconditional offer from one of the three course choices by the deadline.
