Hainan Plans Int’l Student Enrollment Increase to 10,000 by 2025

Key Takeaways:

  • Hainan authorities intend to have 10,000 international student enrollments by 2025
  • The Hainan provincial government promotes the plan through the “Studying on Hainan” brand

China—The official 14th five-year plan of the Hainan provincial government to modernize the education system for 2021-2025 outlines the plan to increase international student intake to 10,000 by 2025 through the “Studying on Hainan” brand.

Prior to this plan crafted by the Hainan provincial government (2016-2020), the province had welcomed about 352 million Chinese and international tourists.

Through this brand of education, Hainan authorities intend to begin the construction of at least three branches of foreign universities and about 15 international schools and kindergartens in the province.

These colleges and schools will then train specialists in agriculture, medicine, technical sciences, and other fields.

Hainan also offers the Hainan Provincial Government International Students Scholarship for prospective international students who wish to study at Hainan University for a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, or doctorate degree. The scholarship will cover the accommodation fee on campus (two students share a room), tuition, registration fee, and medical and accident insurance.

Hainan authorities plan to establish international educational clusters in Jiangdong District International Education Center in Haikou, Lecheng Medical Tourism Pilot Zone in Boao, Lingshui Li Autonomous County, Yangpu Economic Development Zone, and Yazhouwan Academic City in Sanya.

With Hainan’s natural landscapes, developed hotel chain, tropical forests, and beaches, Hainan authorities also envision the province to be an international center for tourism and consumption by 2025.
