There is good news for international students bound for the US to attend their academic programs as they will be permitted to stay in the country as long as they are engaged in their respective studies. This was rolled out by the first bi-annual unified regulatory agenda by the Biden Administration.
During Trump’s administration, the proposal for students was a fixed term of up to two to four years for all student visas. If there is a need to extend, students must undergo a lengthy procedure to extend their visa validity. The said proposal applies to all foreign students presently in the US. The problem is the maximum of four years is shorter than a PhD or bachelor’s degree. This means it would be mandatory for students to undergo a visa extension, which can cause problems with budget and time while completing their studies.
Similarly, international students taking Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) would need to ask for a visa extension for practical training post studies.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recently announced its withdrawal from this cumbersome proposed rule. Instead, international students can continue with their academic programs without worrying about their visa status. This stems from the action plan of the Biden Administration to improve its legal immigration system in the entire country.
