One of the best parts about studying in the UAE is its culture. As a melting pot of diverse backgrounds, the country has plenty in store. And one of them is the holidays that add more fun to student life in the country.

The UAE celebrates many public holidays and other national events that demand observance. Most of these holidays are religious occasions or events of national significance.

Take note of these holidays in the UAE to learn more about its history and culture:

Ramadan

Ramadan is one of the most prominent holidays in the UAE. This celebration takes root in the month when the prophet Muhammad found Quran teachings.

This month-long celebration lasts for 29-30 days. During this period, Muslims in the UAE undergo enduring fasting.

Note that you’re not compelled to fast if you are a non-Muslim. But do keep in mind not to eat your meals in front of your Muslim friends. This is considered rude to do during their fasting period.

Eid al-Fitr

Eid al-Fitr is another one of the most important holidays in the Islamic calendar. This religious holiday marks the end of Ramadan as well as the fasting.

In English, Eid al-Fitr translates to “Festival of Breaking the Fast”. The exact date of this holiday varies depending on the location. This is because the date depends on when the new moon is seen.

Day of Arafat

The Day of Arafat is viewed as the holiest day in the Islamic calendar. The day of Arafat is the ninth day of Dhul-Hijjah. This holiday remembers the day when Shaitan saw Allah forgive servants who committed sins.

The Day of Arafat falls on the twelfth month of the Islamic calendar. It’s also a commemoration of the second day of Hajj.

Eid al-Adha

Muslims around the world celebrate Eid al-Adha after the Day of Arafat. This holiday seeks to honor Ibrahim and his willingness to sacrifice his son through the command of God. But God instead gives him a lamb to slaughter as a sacrifice.

Many Eid al-Adha celebrations around the world still involve rituals. This may include the sacrifice of goats, sheep, and camels.

UAE National Day

The UAE National Day takes place every second of December. This day marks the unification of seven emirates.

This joyful celebration is marked across the entire nation of the UAE. Everywhere you look, there will be symbols and colors of the UAE flag to celebrate.

Martyrs Day

Every November 30, the people of the UAE celebrate Martyrs Day. Also called “Commemoration Day,” this day recognizes the sacrifices of Emirati martyrs.

During this period, people honor the lives of Emiratis who sacrificed their lives. These may be people who sacrificed for military or humanitarian purposes.
