VIU Creates New Graduate Certificate Program in Psychedelic Assisted Therapy

A new program at Vancouver Island University (VIU) is expected to begin in September 2022, as research continues to reveal that psychedelic-assisted therapies have promise for treating mental health disorders.

The graduate certificate program is the first of its kind in Canada, and it is offered by a recognized university like VIU.

Key Takeaways:

  • Vancouver Island University (VIU) will establish a new psychedelic-assisted treatment program in September 2022.
  • The new graduate certificate program at VIU is aimed to prepare healthcare practitioners to provide psychedelic-assisted therapy to patients.
  • The program consists of three-hour weekly theory classes given electronically, allowing people from all over Canada to participate.

The Faculty of Health and Human Services offers this graduate certificate in psychedelic-assisted therapy. It is the first program of its kind to include both theories and supervised practice from an authorized university in Canada.

VIU’s new graduate certificate program is designed to teach healthcare professionals to offer psychedelic-assisted therapies.

Participants in the program will meet once a week in transdisciplinary big and small groups to integrate their expertise.

The program coordinators are also working with the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) to design a dual certificate program that will allow VIU graduates to fulfill the requirements of the MAPS MDMA Therapy Training Program.

Psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy has been used successfully in the program for the past two years to treat treatment-resistant illnesses like PTSD, depression, anxiety, addiction, and disordered eating.

The 15-credit, part-time program is geared for working professionals and runs from September through August.

The curriculum comprises theory courses delivered electronically for three hours each week, allowing people from throughout Canada to take part.

Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in training and/or education and can enroll in the program between now and Mar. 31, 2022.
