If you are planning to study in an English-speaking country such as Study in Australia, chances are, your institution of choice may require you to take an English proficiency test and get a required score to accept you as a student. This is to prove that you have enough language competency to keep up with the subjects that will be taught in English.    One of the most popular and most common language proficiency tests used in Australian institutions is the IELTS. However, did you know that you can still get into an academic institution in Australia without IELTS?  There may be various reasons why some international students would not want to take IELTS—e.g. it would be a waste of their time, it is too expensive, or they are not confident about taking an English proficiency test.  Whatever the reason is, here are some ways to get accepted into an academic institution in Australia without taking IELTS—plus some Australian universities that don’t require it altogether.

Getting Into an Australian Institution Without IELTS

Many higher educational institutions (HEI) usually consider these three common situations when accepting students without requiring them to take IELTS.  First off, if the student’s native language is English, there is usually no need to take the IELTS. Secondly, most Australian institutions accept it if the language of instruction in the student’s former educational institution is English. In this case, the student can get accepted without taking IELTS. Lastly—and this is usually reserved for a limited number of students—if the student is exceptionally talented but is not that proficient in English, the institution may accept him or her, but he or she may have to take a preparatory English course before taking regular classes.

Schools That Accept Students Without IELTS

In case you do not belong in any of those situations or your chosen institution requires IELTS, do not worry. Fortunately, many institutions in Australia accept students without requiring them to take IELTS. Here are some of them:
  • University of Queensland
  • University of Adelaide
  • Bond University
  • Swinburne University of Technology
  • Macquarie University
  • The University of New South Wales
  • Victoria University
These institutions want to make education in Australia more accessible for foreign students, and at the same time, it is a way for them to gain a competitive advantage in the higher education sector. In most cases, these institutions would ask students to give other evidence that they can keep up with the subjects taught in English, such as gaining relevant English certificates; high English grades in their former school; or having work experience in an English-speaking environment.  Although getting into an academic institution in Australia without IELTS would sound better for some students, remember that English proficiency is important when you study in Australia. That is why in the absence of IELTS, other options are given to students to prove their ability to study in a predominantly English-speaking country.  Learn more about other application tips in Australia including applying for scholarships.
