Must Try Food in Malaysia For International Students 1

If you are an international student in Malaysia (fun bonus if you’re a foodie), you are bound to experience unique delicacies that will satisfy you. Whether you want to try Malaysian street food, Chinese or Indian food, Malaysian snacks, or fast food in Malaysia, you’re in for a real treat, as these are unlike any other.

Below are some of the best food in Malaysia and those that originated from other countries but have now become Malaysian staples.

Nasi Lemak

Unofficially dubbed as Malaysia’s national food, nasi lemak is a coconut rice dish for breakfast, served with boiled eggs, fried anchovies, cucumbers, with chili and shrimp paste as sauces. This Malaysian street food is popular across the world and is served in Asian restaurants. Nasi lemak is a Halal food, which means it is approved to be consumed by Muslims.

Assam Laksa

Assam laksa is perfect for chili fans. It is rice noodles in a fishy soup and tamarind. What makes this bowl dish hot and spicy is its bird’s eye chilies.

Bak Kut Teh

Literally translated as “meat bone tea,” bak kut teh is a pork rib stew simmered in a broth of herbs and spices. This dish is served in a large pot and is ideal to pair with rice while dipping in some yau char kwai (Chinese crullers). Bak kut teh is a Chinese cuisine adopted by the Malays.

Roti Canai

Roti canai is a flatbread similar to Indian paratha. This bread can be eaten with curry and is very affordable. If you are looking for other variations, you can enjoy the roti susu, which is sweet with condensed milk, and roti telur, which is fried with egg.

Chendol

Looking for a sweet treat? Malaysia’s chendol is an icy sweet dessert made from coconut milk, palm sugar syrup, and ice shavings. It holds a unique taste that comes from the green jelly-like noodles from mung-bean flour and food coloring.

Beef Rendang

Beef rendang is a dry beef curry spiced with ginger and turmeric, kaffir lime, and chilis. You can put chicken, beef, seafood, or vegetables in your rendang. This dish stays true to its Malaysian roots as its sweet, sour, and savory elements come together beautifully through ingredients such as coconut, tangy asam keping, and sour sun-dried fruit.

Nasi Kandar

A traditional Malaysian food that originated in Penang, nasi kandar consists of steamed rice, different curries, and side dishes such as fried chicken, fish roe, cubed beef, curried mutton, fried prawns, or squids. If you want a healthier version, you can include vegetables such as okra, aubergine, or bitter gourd.
