How many questions are there in the IIT JAM exam?

The IIT JAM exam has 60 questions for 100 marks. They are split into 30 MCQs, 10 MSQs and 20 NAT questions. All three sections are compulsory. This holds for every paper, so the IIT JAM paper pattern for Physics is the same as for Geology.

Can I take two papers in the IIT JAM exam 2027?

Yes, but only if the two papers are in different sessions. The forenoon session has CY, GG and MA. The afternoon session has BT, EN, MS and PH. So CY with PH is valid, and CY with MA is not. The exam fee for two papers is lower than twice the single-paper fee.

IIT JAM 2027 Exam Pattern: Section-Wise Details

The IIT JAM exam pattern has three sections, and each section uses a different question type. Section A has single-answer MCQs. Section B has multiple-select MSQs. Section C has numerical-answer NAT questions. The section-wise details are below. Each paper follows the same IIT JAM paper pattern, so they apply to all seven papers.

30 questions, 50 marks. Q1 to Q10 carry 1 mark each. Q11 to Q30 carry 2 marks each. Each question has four options and exactly one is correct. Wrong answers lose marks.

The IIT JAM question paper pattern mixes three question types in one sitting. The brochure says questions appear in a random sequence on the screen. So do not plan to solve questions in a fixed order. Check the marking scheme of each section before the exam.

Is a calculator allowed in the IIT JAM exam?

The IIT JAM exam pattern gives a virtual calculator on the screen. You cannot bring your own. A scribble pad is also provided for rough work. Write your name and registration number on it before use, and return it at the end. Mobile phones and smartwatches are not allowed.

What are the exam-day rules at the IIT JAM centre?

The centre captures your photo and fingerprint. Fingertips must have no coating, such as mehndi or ink. You must carry the printed admit card and the original photo ID. The centre rules apply on top of the IIT JAM exam pattern. Unfair means lead to cancellation of the candidature and a future ban, as per the brochure code of conduct.

IIT JAM 2027 Questions and Marks Distribution

The IIT JAM question paper pattern gives Section A 50 marks. Section B gets 20 marks and Section C gets 30 marks. The section-wise marks add up to 100 across 60 questions. The IIT JAM exam pattern subject wise has the same marks split for all seven papers. The table shows the split by question number.

Question numbersType and marks eachSection marks
Q1 to Q10MCQ, 1 mark10
Q11 to Q30MCQ, 2 marks40
Q31 to Q40MSQ, 2 marks20
Q41 to Q50NAT, 1 mark10
Q51 to Q60NAT, 2 marks20

Check the arithmetic: 30 + 10 + 20 gives 60 questions, and 50 + 20 + 30 gives 100 marks. In all, 20 questions carry 1 mark and 40 questions carry 2 marks. Section-wise, Section A carries half of all marks.

Most marks sit in 2-mark questions: 80 of the 100 marks. A candidate who loses 2-mark MCQs to wrong answers loses the most. Sections B and C carry 50 marks with no negative marking. The IIT JAM paper pattern keeps these scoring rules the same for every paper.

IIT JAM 2027 Exam Duration and Session Timings

The IIT JAM exam has no sectional time limit. The IIT JAM exam time is one block of 3 hours for all 60 questions. You split the time yourself. In the IIT JAM exam pattern subject wise, only the session changes. The IIT JAM exam pattern 2027 runs in two sessions on 14 February 2027.

What is the IIT JAM exam time?

The IIT JAM exam time is 3 hours, and the start depends on your paper. The forenoon session runs from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. The afternoon session runs from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm.

SessionIIT JAM exam timePapers
Forenoon9:30 am to 12:30 pmCY, GG, MA
Afternoon2:30 pm to 5:30 pmBT, EN, MS, PH

How should I split the 3 hours?

Three hours for 60 questions gives an average of 3 minutes per question. This section-wise split is a practical plan, not an official rule. Spend about 80 minutes on Section A, 30 minutes on Section B and 55 minutes on Section C. Keep 15 minutes to review. Adjust it after you take the free mock test for your paper.

How much extra time do PwD candidates get?

Candidates with benchmark disabilities get 60 minutes of compensatory time per paper, given automatically. The forenoon paper then ends at 1:30 pm. The afternoon paper ends at 6:30 pm. The exam body arranges a scribe when needed. This extra hour is added to the IIT JAM exam time. The PwD forms are due on 30 December 2026, which is tentative.

IIT JAM 2027 Marking Scheme

The IIT JAM marking scheme has negative marking only in Section A. A wrong 1-mark MCQ costs one-third of a mark, and a wrong 2-mark MCQ costs two-thirds of a mark. Sections B and C have no negative marking. The marking scheme is unchanged from the IIT JAM exam pattern 2026. The section-wise marking scheme is simple.

Question typeCorrect answerWrong answer
MCQ, 1 mark+1-1/3
MCQ, 2 marks+2-2/3
MSQ, 2 marks+2 for the full correct set0
NAT, 1 mark+10
NAT, 2 marks+20
Not attempted00

Is there negative marking in the IIT JAM exam?

Yes, the IIT JAM exam pattern has negative marking only for MCQs in Section A. MSQ and NAT never lose marks. MSQ also gives no partial marks. If the key is options A and C, then A and C gives 2 marks. Choosing only A gives 0. Choosing A, C and D also gives 0.

How is the IIT JAM score calculated from the answer key?

Add the marks for each correct answer and subtract the negative marks in Section A. The IIT JAM exam pattern gives a total out of 100. For example, you answer 18 two-mark MCQs correctly and 2 wrongly. Section A gives 36 minus 4/3, which is 34.67. The final answer key for NAT may accept a range of answers, as per the key.

A blind guess among four MCQ options has zero expected gain. One chance in four gains the full mark, and three chances in four lose a third. If you can remove one option, a guess starts to pay. This is simple arithmetic from the scheme, not an official tip.

The official PDFs are on the JAM site. Past papers show how the IIT JAM question paper pattern tests each topic. Find them on the IIT JAM question papers page.

IIT JAM Exam Pattern Changes Over the Years

The IIT JAM exam pattern has not changed in the 2025, 2026 and 2027 brochures. All three describe 60 questions, 100 marks and sections A, B and C. The IIT JAM exam pattern 2026 was the same as the 2025 pattern. The IIT JAM paper pattern also stayed the same for 2027. The IIT JAM exam pattern and syllabus stayed stable from 2025 to 2027, except for the EN syllabus. This page does not compare years before 2025, because no earlier brochure was checked.

The IIT JAM exam pattern 2026 and 2027 use one marking scheme. Two things did change. The Economics syllabus was revised for 2027, and the organising IIT changed to Kharagpur.

The tie-break rule is the one item you cannot confirm. The JAM 2025 brochure gave a tie-break order. No 2026 or 2027 statement was found in the documents checked for this page. The exam date moves between early and mid February each year. The result has come in mid or late March.

The IIT JAM exam pattern stayed fixed, but the numbers behind it moved. Participation, difficulty and qualifying marks differed by paper in JAM 2025 and JAM 2026. Read the IIT JAM exam pattern subject wise together with the numbers below. The IIT JAM question paper pattern is fixed, yet each paper behaves differently. The tables use the official statistical reports of each year.

The first table shows candidates who appeared and qualified. Each cell shows 2025 first, then 2026.
