Is the IIT JAM exam only for IIT admission?

No. The score opens two routes. The first is JOAPS, which fills about 3,000 or more seats at 23 admitting IITs. The second is result-sharing institutes, which use the same score under their own process. These include NITs through CCMN, IISc, IISER Pune and Bhopal, DIAT and others. The brochure says over 2,000 seats are in this second group, while a website graphic shows 2,300+. The route you need decides the rules you must check. IIT JAM Eligibility Criteria 2027

You can take the IIT JAM exam 2027 if you hold a bachelor's degree. Final-year students can also apply if they sit the final exam in 2027. There is no age limit and no attempt limit. Backlogs are allowed at this stage. The IIT JAM eligibility criteria for admission are a second layer, and each institute sets them.

Run these checks in order before you apply for the IIT JAM exam. Each one tells you what to do next.

  1. Degree. If you have a completed UG degree, you can apply. If you are in the final year, you can also apply. You must finish the UG programme before the admission date of the institute you join.
  2. Nationality. Indian and foreign nationals can both apply. If you are a foreign national, you must also meet the admitting institute's rules for foreign students.
  3. Paper choice. Pick the paper that matches your degree subjects. Compare the IIT JAM syllabus and the IIT JAM cutoff of each paper you consider. If you want two papers, they must be in different sessions.
  4. Institute rules. The IIT JAM eligibility criteria for each programme are the Minimum Educational Qualifications (MEQ). They sit in Annexure II of the brochure. Only the admitting institute verifies them.
  5. Category proof. If you claim OBC-NCL or EWS, your certificate must be issued on or after 1 April 2026.
  6. Name match. Your name must match your qualifying degree. Do not add Mr or Dr.
  7. NIT route. If you want NIT seats through CCMN, CCMN has its own marks rule. In 2026 General, EWS and OBC candidates needed 6.5 CGPA or 60%. SC, ST and PwD candidates needed 6.0 CGPA or 55%. CCMN 2027 is not announced.

Is there an IIT JAM eligibility percentage for 2027?

There is no minimum percentage to take the IIT JAM exam. Marks and subject years are set by each admitting institute, programme by programme. IITs admit through JOAPS on All India Rank (AIR), and the institute checks your MEQ. NITs through CCMN used a minimum percentage in 2026. Read the IIT JAM eligibility criteria of each target institute before you pick a paper.

Can a B.Tech student take the IIT JAM exam?

Yes, any graduate can sit the IIT JAM exam. Admission depends on the programme. IIT Madras shows how the IIT JAM eligibility criteria work for its M.Sc. programmes, as per its own admissions page and Annexure II.

IIT Madras M.Sc.Subject years neededSeats (2027)
PhysicsPhysics 2 years, Mathematics 1 year. No restriction on engineering degrees.54
ChemistryChemistry 3 years, Mathematics 1 year67

Other institutes have other rules. Read Annexure II for each institute before you choose a paper.

Which two papers can I choose together?

In the IIT JAM exam, two papers are allowed only if they fall in different sessions. Forenoon papers are CY, GG and MA. Afternoon papers are BT, EN, MS and PH.

PaperSessionCan be paired with
CY, GG, MAForenoonBT, EN, MS or PH
BT, EN, MS, PHAfternoonCY, GG or MA

So CY with PH is valid. CY with MA is not valid.

IIT JAM Exam Pattern 2027: Marks & Duration

The IIT JAM exam pattern is the same for all seven papers: 60 questions, 100 marks and 3 hours. The paper has three compulsory sections, A, B and C. The brochure shows no change in the IIT JAM exam 2027 pattern from 2025 and 2026. Read the IIT JAM exam pattern page for details.

SessionTimePapers
Forenoon9:30 am to 12:30 pmCY, GG, MA

The IIT JAM exam has no sectional time limit. A virtual calculator is on the screen, and you cannot bring your own.

Is there negative marking in IIT JAM?

Yes, the IIT JAM exam has negative marking only in Section A. A wrong 1-mark MCQ costs one-third of a mark. A wrong 2-mark MCQ costs two-thirds of a mark. Section B (MSQ) and Section C (NAT) have no negative marking. Unattempted questions give zero in every section.

IIT JAM Exam Question Pattern in 2027

The IIT JAM exam has three question types. Section A has MCQ, Section B has MSQ and Section C has NAT. Marks add up to 50 + 20 + 30 = 100.

SectionQuestionsMarks
A: MCQ, one correct option30 (10 of 1 mark, 20 of 2 marks)50
B: MSQ, one or more correct options10 (2 marks each)20
C: NAT, typed number20 (10 of 1 mark, 10 of 2 marks)30

What are MSQ and NAT questions in the IIT JAM exam?

MSQ means multiple select question, and NAT means numerical answer type. In MSQ, one or more options can be correct, but never all four. You get marks only for the full correct set, with no partial or negative marking. In NAT, no options are shown. You type a real number with the virtual keyboard, with no negative marking.

Here is our own worked example, using the brochure's marking scheme. Say you answer 18 two-mark MCQs correctly and 2 wrongly. You score 36 and lose 4/3, so Section A gives 34.67. Use the answer key after the IIT JAM exam to check your own marks.

IIT JAM Exam Syllabus 2027

The IIT JAM exam syllabus 2027 is published as seven separate PDFs on the official website, one for each paper. They match Annexure I of the brochure. Read the IIT JAM syllabus of your paper before any book. Six IIT JAM exam papers are unchanged from 2026. The Economics (EN) syllabus was revised and reordered. The IIT JAM syllabus 2027 page lists topics paper by paper.

PaperSyllabus partsOfficial PDF
Biotechnology (BT)6 sections
Chemistry (CY)4 sections
Economics (EN)5 sections
Geology (GG)9 topic blocks
Mathematics (MA)3 sections
Mathematical Statistics (MS)12 sections
Physics (PH)7 sections

Has the IIT JAM syllabus changed for 2027?

Only for Economics. The IIT JAM syllabus for EN now begins with Mathematics for Economics and has a revised Indian Economy unit. BT, CY, GG, MA, MS and PH are unchanged apart from formatting. This is a comparison of the 2026 and 2027 official files.

Topic weightage is published only for the MS paper. It says Mathematics is about 25% and Statistics about 75%. Other papers publish no section-wise weightage. The BT paper also tests 10+2 level Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics, beyond biology.

IIT JAM 2027 Result

The IIT JAM exam result 2027 is expected on 18 March 2027. This date is tentative and appears only on the official homepage. In 2026 the IIT JAM exam result was live on 19 March 2026. You check the result on the JOAPS portal, where the scorecard and rank can also be downloaded.

There is no percentile in the IIT JAM result. JAM reports raw marks out of 100 and an All India Rank (AIR). AIR is given separately for each paper. Only candidates who reach the IIT JAM qualifying marks of their category and paper get a scorecard. CCMN, a different body, turns the JAM rank into a Common Percentile for NIT seats.

How long is the IIT JAM result valid?

We found no official sentence that states a validity period for the score. The brochure says JAM 2027 scores are for admission in 2027-28. CCMN 2026 asked for a valid JAM score of the year 2026. Confirm the validity with your institute.

The table shows how many candidates appeared and qualified in each paper in JAM 2026. It follows the official statistical report.

PaperAppeared in 2026Qualified in 2026
BT11,0842,593
CY11,0213,249
EN2,807629
GG1,813627
MA9,6173,463
MS2,705754
PH9,1234,499

The tie-break rule for 2027 is not stated yet. The JAM 2025 order started with fewer negative marks. Next came NAT marks, MSQ marks, marks in 2-mark questions and 2-mark NAT marks. The last step was the older date of birth. See the IIT JAM results 2027 page for more.

IIT JAM 2027 Selection Process: JOAPS Rounds and CCMN

The IIT JAM selection process has two main routes. IITs admit through JOAPS on All India Rank. NITs and other central institutes admit through CCMN. Other institutes, such as IISc and the IISERs, run their own process using IIT JAM exam scores. The IIT JAM exam 2027 admission dates are not announced.

Is there an interview for IIT JAM admission?

No. At the IITs there is no interview and no written test. You apply on JOAPS after the result. Admission follows AIR, reservation policy and seat availability. The institute then checks your MEQ and category proof.

How many rounds are there in JOAPS?

The brochure says a maximum of four rounds, and an additional round if seats remain. In each round you can choose Accept and Freeze, Accept and Upgrade, or Reject and Quit. The IIT JAM exam fees you paid at registration are separate. At admission you pay ₹750 as a non-refundable processing fee. Advance seat booking is ₹15,000 for General, OBC-NCL and EWS, and ₹7,500 for SC, ST and PwD.

CCMN is the Centralized Counselling for M.Sc. and M.Sc. (Tech) at NITs and other CFTIs. NIT Agartala hosted it in 2026 for 38 institutes. Merit used a Common Percentile worked out from the JAM rank. The 2026 CCMN registration fee was ₹3,500 for General, EWS and OBC, and ₹3,000 for SC, ST and PwD. CCMN 2027 is not announced. See IIT JAM counselling 2027 for both routes.

COAP is not used for IIT JAM. It is the GATE counselling portal. JAM uses JOAPS and CCMN.

IIT JAM Exam Previous Year Question Paper

The official JAM website hosts 35 previous IIT JAM exam question papers and answer keys, from 2022 to 2026. Answer keys are included for 2023 to 2026. The 2022 files are question papers only. The IIT JAM question papers page explains how to use them.

Where can I download IIT JAM question papers?

Use the download page on jam.iitkgp.ac.in. Each file is named by year and paper code, for example 2026_PH_QP_AK.pdf. A free mock test for each paper is on the official mock test page. The exam body publishes answer keys, not worked solutions. Use the key to check your own working.

IIT JAM 2027 Preparation Strategy & Best Books

Start with the official material, because the IIT JAM exam 2027 only tests the published syllabus. The official set is the IIT JAM syllabus PDF, the question papers with keys and the free mock test. No book list is issued by the exam body. See IIT JAM books for full profiles.

Use the marking rules in your plan. A wrong MCQ in Section A costs marks. MSQ and NAT carry no penalty, so attempt all of them. Solve the 2026 paper for your subject in a timed 3-hour block.

Which books should I use for the IIT JAM exam?

These are standard texts widely used for the syllabus topics. They are not an official list. Use the latest edition.

PaperCommonly used books
PHGriffiths, Introduction to Electrodynamics; Beiser, Concepts of Modern Physics
CYAtkins and de Paula, Physical Chemistry; J.D. Lee, Concise Inorganic Chemistry; Clayden, Organic Chemistry

Pages written by Atul are in plain English that can be understood in one read, and they open with the question the reader is most likely to have.
