In 1960, a group of central Illinois citizens, united in their goal of bringing a four-year university to the capital city, formed the Springfield Committee for Higher Education.
Legislation creating Sangamon State University (SSU) was signed in 1969. The first classes were held in 1970, which is considered the founding year of SSU.
Sangamon State University was acquired by the University of Illinois in 1995 , and became known as the University of Illinois Springfield (UIS).
They’re proud to be one of three universities in the world-class University of Illinois System.
Every year, approximately 4,000 students enroll here to earn a U of I degree - where classes aren’t too big or too small, and professors really know their students. They have over 50 years of empowering leaders and look forward to having you join us.
They are dedicated to fully engaging students in the process of active teaching and learning, and offer degree-granting programs in four colleges.
The University of Illinois Springfield provides a uniquely student-centered educational experience both in and out of the classroom through active learning, meaningful research and impactful civic engagement that prepares graduates to contribute fully to society.
The UIS Career Development Center helps students turn their strengths and abilities into success by providing resources, collaborating with partners, and building counseling and advising relationships. We empower all students to help them prepare and adapt to lifelong change as they pursue meaningful personal and professional success.
