Master of Arts - MA in Psychology Marshall University

The general psychology MA program requires a minimum of 36 graduate credit hours, though students may complete significantly more, depending upon their objectives. A common “core” of 24 credits is required of all students. The remaining hours are selected in consultation with an advisor to help meet students’ academic and professional goals.

For both educational and ethical reasons, it is important that students obtain education and training that is consistent with their career goals. For example, students who intend to work in applied fields of psychology (e.g., clinical, counseling, school, industrial/organizational) should pursue and complete programs of study that prepare them with the skills, knowledge, and supervised experience needed to develop competence in that field; this process is consistent with the APA ethical requirement that psychologists restrict their professional work to areas in which they have developed and maintained competence.

Prospective students in the general MA program should recognize that the general MA program is not in itself a clinical training program; students who plan to do clinical work should apply for and complete the entire Clinical Psychology sequence, which is designed to prepare graduates for entry-level clinical positions.
