The BSc (Hons) Ocean Sciences program at the University of Liverpool is a scientific program that studies the physical, chemical, biological, and geological characteristics and phenomena of the seas and oceans. The curriculum deals with current global challenges such as climate change and sea-level rise, exploring how the ocean reacts to these changes and what can be done to mitigate them. The program combines elements of physics, chemistry, biology, geology, and environmental science, providing students with a broad understanding of marine systems. Some of the core subject areas include oceanography, marine biology, marine geosciences, and marine and freshwater ecology.
Students have access to advanced laboratory facilities, can participate in field trips to coastal environments and have opportunities to study abroad. The program also emphasizes the development of practical skills, including data collection and analysis, laboratory techniques, as well as transferable skills like problem-solving, team-working, and communication.
With strong ties to industry, government, and research institutes, the University of Liverpool offers graduates with Ocean Sciences degrees a wide range of career pathways, such as environmental consulting, marine policy and conservation, research, and much more.
The University of Liverpool (abbreviated UOL; locally known as The Uni of) is a public research university in Liverpool, England. Founded as a college in 1881, it gained its Royal Charter in 1903 with the ability to award degrees, and is also known to be one of the six 'red brick' civic universities, the first to be referred to as The Original Red Brick. It is a founding member of the Russell Group, the N8 Group for research collaboration and the university management school is triple crown accredited. Ten Nobel Prize winners are amongst its alumni and past faculty and the university offers more than 230 first degree courses across 103 subjects. Its alumni include the CEOs of GlobalFoundries, ARM Holdings, Tesco, Motorola and The Coca-Cola Company. It was the UK's first university to establish departments in oceanography, civic design, architecture, and biochemistry (at the Johnston Laboratories). In 2006 the university became the first in the UK to establish an independent university in China, Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, making it the world's first Sino-British university. For 2021–22, Liverpool had a turnover of £612.6 million, including £113.6 million from research grants and contracts.
