Master of Mathematics - MMath - Hons University of Bath, UK

At the start of the course, you’ll gain a broad education in pure and applied mathematics, including programming and statistics. You’ll have the freedom to study a broader mathematical pathway or specialise in your favourite subject areas, enhancing your analytical thinking and appreciation of the beauty of mathematics. All of our courses are flexible and allow for a wide choice of units after year one. You may switch between Mathematics and Mathematics and Statistics at any stage during year one, while switches to or from Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science can be done at the end of year one if you obtain a sufficiently high mark. The MMath gives you the same core knowledge as the bachelor’s but with greater exposure to research. It includes master's level units and a final year project, preparing you for postgraduate study or a career in academic or industrial research. Examples of recent projects include Tropical Geometry, Fourier Analysis and Hardy Spaces, and Analysing Online Conversations Around COVID-19. As a mathematics student here, you’ll have access to a wide range of support options, including tutorials, a personal tutor and the Mathematics Resources Centre (MASH) to assist with revision and coursework if you need it. Our academics carry out their own high-level research alongside teaching, so the latest developments always inform modules. Some units give you the opportunity to work alongside our academics and contribute to research in the Department.

The University of Bath is a public research university in Bath, England. It received its royal charter in 1966, along with a number of other institutions following the Robbins Report. Like the University of Bristol and University of the West of England, Bath can trace its roots to the Merchant Venturers' Technical College, established in Bristol as a school in 1595 by the Society of Merchant Venturers. The university's main campus is located on Claverton Down, a site overlooking the UNESCO World Heritage city of Bath, and was purpose-built, constructed from 1964 in the modernist style of the time.

In the 2021 Research Excellence Framework, 40% of Bath's submitted research activity achieved the highest possible classification of 4*, defined as world-leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour. 92% was graded 4*/3*, defined as world-leading/internationally excellent. The annual income of the institution for 2021–22 was £361.8 million of which £40.5 million was from research grants and contracts, with an expenditure of £388.3 million.
