JEE Advanced Exam Pattern 2027: Key Highlights

JEE Advanced has two papers. Each paper runs three hours on a computer. This basic structure has held for years, but section counts, marks per question and negative marking change most years. As of 13 September 2026, IIT Delhi has not released a 2027 version of these details.

These features of JEE Advanced 2027 will almost certainly stay the same. They have not changed for a long time. Paper 1 and Paper 2 are both compulsory, run for 3 hours each (4 hours for PwD candidates), and cover Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Both are computer-based, in English and Hindi, and the exam has no interview and no group discussion at any stage.

Not much detail is known about the exact number of sections per subject, the exact number of questions, the exact marks per question and the exact negative marking values. As of 13 September 2026, IIT Delhi has not released an Information Brochure for 2027. The host IIT has confirmed the exam date officially in early December for each of the last three cycles, with the full brochure following about three to four weeks later. Expect a similar pattern for 2027.

JEE Advanced 2027 pattern: not yet released

13 September 2026

As of 13 September 2026, [IIT Delhi](https://www.msmunify.com/in/college/iit-delhi) has not confirmed it will organise JEE Advanced 2027. The 7-year IIT rotation points to IIT Delhi as host. IIT Kanpur officially confirmed the 2025 exam date on 2 December 2024. IIT Roorkee officially confirmed the 2026 exam date on 5-6 December 2025, then published its full brochure about three weeks later, by 29-30 December 2025. Based on this pattern, expect IIT Delhi to confirm the 2027 exam date around early December 2026, with the full brochure following roughly three to four weeks after that, likely by early January 2027. This is a pattern-based estimate, not a confirmed date.

JEE Advanced also has an Architecture Aptitude Test (AAT) for B.Arch aspirants, open only to candidates who want B.Arch at IIT (BHU) Varanasi, IIT Kharagpur or IIT Roorkee. AAT is a separate 3-hour, 300-mark paper, held after the JEE Advanced result, and only candidates who already qualified JEE Advanced can sit it. It has nothing to do with your Paper 1 and Paper 2 scores.

The JEE Advanced Overview 2027 page covers eligibility, seats and this exam's IIT-only scope. Check it for admission chances, not exam-day mechanics.

JEE Advanced 2027 Exam Pattern: Section-Wise Details

JEE Advanced 2027 will almost certainly follow the same basic structure as 2026. Each paper splits into three subject papers: Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Each subject paper splits further into sections. The number of sections, and what each one asks, changes every year. The tabs below show the actual 2026 structure, the most recent one released. They show what a "section" in this exam actually looks like.

Each subject (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics) in Paper 1, 2026 had 4 sections, 16 questions and 60 marks:

  • Section 1: 4 single-correct MCQs, 12 marks
  • Section 2: 4 multiple-correct MCQs, 16 marks
  • Section 3: 4 numerical-value questions, 16 marks
  • Section 4: 4 matching-list questions, 16 marks

Across all three subjects: 48 questions, 180 marks. Source: official JEE (Advanced) 2026 Paper 1 question paper, jeeadv.ac.in.

Paper 1 and Paper 2 are not mirror copies of each other, even in the same year. In 2025, Paper 2 had only 3 sections per subject, not 4. It had no matching-list section at all. JEE Advanced 2027 could restructure any of this again. Treat the 2026 layout as the starting reference point.

JEE Advanced 2027 Questions and Marks Distribution

Total marks have stayed fixed at 360 for the last two cycles, even when the question count changed.

Total marks stayed at 360 in both 2025 and 2026, but total questions rose from 96 to 102. IIT Roorkee added an extra question per subject in Paper 2 for 2026 and rebalanced marks per section to hold the 360 ceiling. That is exactly the kind of shift the JEE Advanced 2027 paper could repeat, reverse, or ignore. IIT Kanpur's own 2025 results page confirms the 360-mark ceiling directly, listing the topper's score as 332 out of 360.

The JEE Advanced Question Paper 2027 page walks through real past papers for better understanding.

JEE Advanced 2027 Sectional Time Limit: There Isn't One

No. JEE Advanced does not enforce a sectional time limit inside a paper. Each paper is one continuous 3-hour window covering Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics together. You choose how to split your own time across subjects and sections.

Don't import CAT or XAT habits here

CAT and some MBA entrance exams lock you into a fixed time slot per section. JEE Advanced does not. Once Paper 1 or Paper 2 starts, all three subjects and every section inside them stay open for the full 3 hours, in any order you choose.

This has held true across every JEE Advanced question paper we checked, 2024 through 2026. Each paper prints section-wise marks on the page, never a section-wise clock. The only hard time boundaries are paper-level, not sectional. Paper 1 gets one 3-hour slot, and Paper 2 gets a separate 3-hour slot the same day, with a gap between them. Nothing about JEE Advanced 2027 suggests this changes. One can expect it to remain the same this year.

JEE Advanced 2027 Marking Scheme

The marking scheme changes more than any other part of this exam. The tabs below show the confirmed 2026 scheme, section by section, straight from the official question papers.

+3 for the correct option, 0 if unanswered, -1 for any wrong answer. Confirmed in both Paper 1 and Paper 2, 2026, jeeadv.ac.in.

The -2 to -1 change is real, and it may not last

IIT Kanpur (2024, 2025) charged -2 for a wrong multiple-correct answer. IIT Roorkee (2026) charged -1 instead. That is a genuine year-to-year change, confirmed from the official question papers of all three years. Nothing says IIT Delhi keeps the softer -1 for JEE Advanced 2027. It could return to -2, or change again.

One rule stays constant across every year and every paper: your rank comes from raw marks, not a converted score. JEE Advanced adds your Paper 1 and Paper 2 marks together. Category-wise qualifying cutoffs apply, and your All India Rank comes from that raw total.

JEE Advanced 2027 Section-Wise Syllabus and Important Topics

JEE Advanced does not publish a section-wise or chapter-wise weightage table.

The syllabus itself is genuinely official, and IIT Delhi publishes it in the Information Brochure. It splits into Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, each with named topics and sub-topics. The exam pattern itself, meaning sections, question types and marks, applies uniformly across all three subjects in a paper. No subject gets extra sections or a different question mix.

Physics

Mechanics, electricity and magnetism, optics, modern physics, thermodynamics and waves, spread across single-correct, multiple-correct, numerical and (in years that include it) matching-list questions.

Chemistry

Physical, organic and inorganic chemistry in roughly equal weight historically, tested with the same section structure as Physics and Mathematics in that year's paper.

Mathematics

Algebra, calculus, coordinate geometry, trigonometry and vectors, again spread across whatever section types that year's Paper 1 and Paper 2 use.

The JEE Advanced 2027 Syllabus page has the full topic list. It also covers what has been dropped or added in recent years.

JEE Advanced Exam Pattern Changes Over the Years

JEE Advanced does not look the same every year. Here's what changed across the three most recently released cycles, confirmed from the official question papers of each year.

  1. 2024, IIT Madras

    4-section Paper 1, 17 questions per subject

Section 2 (multiple-correct) carried -2 for a wrong answer. Section 4 (matching-list) paid +3 for a correct combination, with 4 sections and 6 numerical questions in Section 3.

  2. 2025, IIT Kanpur

Paper 2 dropped to 3 sections per subject

Paper 1 kept 4 sections; Paper 2 had only single-correct, multiple-correct and numerical sections, no matching-list section. Numerical section expanded to 8 questions worth 32 marks in Paper 2. -2 for wrong multiple-correct answers stayed.

  3. 2026, IIT Roorkee

    Multiple-correct penalty softened to -1

Both papers ran 4 sections per subject again. Matching-list returned to Paper 2, in a modified linked-stem format worth 8 marks. Total questions rose to 102 from 2025's 96, while total marks stayed at 360.

  4. 2027, IIT Delhi (expected)

    Pattern not yet released

No Information Brochure, no section structure, no marking scheme, as of 13 September 2026. IIT Delhi has not confirmed it will organise JEE Advanced 2027. Based on the last three cycles, expect IIT Delhi to confirm the exam date around early December 2026, with the full brochure following about three to four weeks later, likely by early January 2027.

Section layouts changed in all three cycles, 2024, 2025 and 2026, but total marks stayed at 360 in each one. That consistency is the closest thing to a stable rule that JEE Advanced offers.

Two trends hold up across 2024, 2025 and 2026. First, total marks held at 360 in all three years. Second, the marking scheme changed a little every year, even when the overall structure looked similar.

That second trend matters more for how you prepare. The multiple-correct penalty alone moved from -2 to -1 between 2025 and 2026.

What history says about brochure timing

IIT Delhi has not released a brochure for 2027, as of 13 September 2026. IIT Kanpur officially confirmed the 2025 exam date on 2 December 2024, with its full brochure live by 24-25 December 2024. IIT Roorkee officially confirmed the 2026 exam date on 5-6 December 2025, with its full brochure live by 29-30 December 2025. Based on this pattern, expect IIT Delhi to confirm the 2027 exam date around early December 2026, with the full brochure following roughly three to four weeks after that, likely by early January 2027.

Commonly asked questions

Answers to what readers ask most often.

Q: Has the JEE Advanced 2027 exam pattern been released?

No, it has not been released as of 13 September 2026. IIT Delhi has not published an Information Brochure for 2027. Going by 2024, 2025 and 2026, the host IIT typically confirms the exam date officially in early December of the prior year, with the full brochure following about three to four weeks later. Data Sources: JEE (Advanced) Official Website (jeeadv.ac.in).

Q: How many papers are there in JEE Advanced?

Two compulsory papers, Paper 1 and Paper 2. Both must be attempted; skipping either disqualifies your candidature. Each runs 3 hours, held the same day with a break between them. This structure has stayed fixed for a long time. Data Sources: JEE (Advanced) Official Website (jeeadv.ac.in).

Q: What was the total marks in JEE Advanced 2026?

360 marks, 180 in each paper. Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics carried 120 marks each across both papers combined. The same 360 ceiling applied in 2025 too. Data Sources: JEE (Advanced) 2026 official question papers, jeeadv.ac.in; IIT Kanpur JEE (Advanced) 2025 results page, iitk.ac.in.

Q: Is there a sectional time limit in JEE Advanced?

No. Each paper is one continuous 3-hour window across all three subjects; there is no separate clock per section. You decide your own order and pacing within that single window. This is unlike sectional-timer exams such as CAT. Data Sources: JEE (Advanced) official question papers, jeeadv.ac.in.
