XAT is the entrance exam every XLRI applicant needs to clear. XAT stands for Xavier Aptitude Test. XLRI conducts it every January, for XAMI (the Xavier Association of Management Institutes) and a wider list of associate B-schools. XAT 2027 is on January 3, 2027, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Registration runs from July 15 to December 6, 2026, on xatonline.in.
XAT might look like just another CAT-alternative exam. But it tests two things CAT doesn't: Decision Making and General Knowledge. That's the main reason so many CAT aspirants also sit for XAT, not because the two exams overlap. 250+ B-schools across India, including XLRI's own management programmes, accept XAT.
XAT is a national-level, computer-based aptitude test. XLRI Jamshedpur has conducted it for over 75 years, according to the institute's own site (source: xatonline.in, 2027). XLRI runs the exam for XAMI member institutes and a wider group of associate B-schools. These institutes accept the XAT score for admission into MBA and PGDM programmes.
XAT is not a state or central government exam. Many entrance tests are, so this point is worth knowing. XLRI Jamshedpur conducts XAT on behalf of XAMI's member institutes. That's why an XAT score carries direct weight at XLRI's own flagship programmes. At other colleges that accept XAT, the score is just one option among several entrance tests. At XLRI, it's the main one.
XAT stands for Xavier Aptitude Test. The word "Xavier" comes from XLRI's original name, Xavier Labour Relations Institute, now renamed XLRI – Xavier School of Management. It also refers to the wider XAMI network of Xavier-affiliated business schools. XLRI represents this network every year when it conducts the exam.
XLRI conducts XAT for the wider XAMI network (source: xatonline.in). XLRI took the initiative to form XAMI in the first place, per the association's own history page (source: xami.in/history). Today, XAT 2027 colleges beyond XAMI accept the score too.
Yes, in two main ways. XAT has a Decision Making section and a General Knowledge section. CAT has neither (source: xatonline.in, 2027). CAT sticks to three sections: VARC, DILR and Quant. XAT adds workplace-style judgment questions and a short general awareness test on top of these. This means XAT needs different preparation than CAT. It isn't simply a harder version of CAT.
Before going section by section, here is the whole exam in one sitting: pattern, syllabus, eligibility and the colleges that accept the score.

This part decides whether the rest of this page applies to you. XAT 2027 requires a recognised Bachelor's degree of at least three years' duration, in any discipline (source: xatonline.in/faq). XLRI's eligibility answer names only the degree and its duration. It does not mention a minimum percentage anywhere in that answer.
If you're still in your final year, you can still apply. XLRI's own FAQ page states final-year candidates are eligible if they finish their exams by June 12, 2027. But a separate answer on that same page names June 11, 2027, for XLRI applications specifically. Both dates come from the same source, and the gap between them is small but real.
Two dates on the same official FAQ page
xatonline.in's FAQ names June 12, 2027 as the final-year completion deadline in its general eligibility answer. Its XLRI-specific answer names June 11, 2027 instead. Treat mid-June 2027 as your working deadline. Confirm the exact date with XLRI, or your shortlisted institute, closer to the time.
One more thing worth knowing early. Indian candidates must take XAT itself. NRI, Foreign, OCI and PIO candidates can apply through GMAT instead (source: xatonline.in/faq, 2027). If that's you, XAT's exam-day sections don't apply to you. The eligibility degree requirement still does.
Registration opened July 15, 2026, and closes December 6, 2026, on xatonline.in (source: xatonline.in, 2027). The base fee is Rs. 2,300. XLRI charges Rs. 200 for every additional XLRI programme preference beyond the first (source: xatonline.in/registration). Candidates applying through the GMAT/GRE route pay Rs. 2,600 if they're Indian. NRI, Foreign, PIO or OCI applicants using GMAT pay Rs. 5,000.
The form runs through a save-and-continue flow. You fill in personal and academic details, then add work experience if you have any. Next you choose your preferred XLRI programmes and test cities. Upload a photo and signature, preview the full form, and only then pay. Two upload rules cause the most problems:
For the complete step-by-step walkthrough and every fee slab in one table, head to the XAT 2027 registration page.
Your admit card download opens December 20, 2026 (tentative), directly on xatonline.in (source: xatonline.in, 2027). There's no separate email link and no third-party portal. It's the same site you registered on.
Log in to your XAT account on xatonline.in with your registered credentials. Open the admit card section once it goes live, and download the PDF. Print a physical copy and carry a valid photo ID on exam day. The test centre typically doesn't accept a screenshot on your phone.
No. XLRI's own site marks December 20, 2026 as tentative, not final. Bookmark the XAT 2027 admit card page. Check back in the first two weeks of December instead of assuming the date is fixed.
XAT 2027 runs 95 questions across four sections, in 180 minutes total. That time splits into two timed parts (source: xatonline.in, 2027; structural split confirmed via XLRI's XAT 2025 Overview document). Part 1 gives you 170 minutes for Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning, Decision Making, and Quantitative Aptitude & Data Interpretation. That's 75 questions (26 + 21 + 28), and you can attempt them in any order within that shared window. Part 2 is a separate, fixed 10-minute window for the 20-question General Knowledge section.
Every correct answer earns +1 mark. Every wrong answer costs 0.25 marks, except in General Knowledge, which carries no negative marking at all (source: xatonline.in, 2027). You also get to skip up to 8 questions across the exam with zero penalty. From the 9th skip onward, each extra skip costs 0.1 mark, whether you attempt it or not.
Only General Knowledge does. Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning, Decision Making, and Quantitative Aptitude & Data Interpretation share one 170-minute pool. There are no sectional caps (source: xatonline.in/faq, 2027). You can spend more time on Quant and less on Verbal, if that suits you. The only rule is finishing all three inside that shared window.
Your first 8 skips are free. From the 9th skip onward, each one costs 0.1 mark. This is separate from the negative marking on wrong answers. On its own, that looks like a small penalty. But skip 15 questions, and you lose 0.7 marks, even before a single wrong answer counts against you. Guess strategically instead of leaving blanks by default.
For the deeper breakdown of scoring scenarios and how this pattern compares with past cycles, see XAT 2027 exam pattern.
| Section | Questions | Time Window |
|---|---|---|
| Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning | 26 | Shares 170-minute pool |
| Decision Making | 21 | Shares 170-minute pool |
| Quantitative Aptitude & Data Interpretation | 28 | Shares 170-minute pool |
| General Knowledge | 20 | Fixed 10 minutes |
| Total | 95 | 180 minutes |

Decision Making gives you real workplace-style dilemmas, drawn from personal and professional situations (source: xatonline.in, 2027). It asks you to judge, prioritise and choose between imperfect options. CAT, the exam most XAT aspirants also prepare for, has no equivalent section. A management degree eventually asks you to make calls with incomplete information, and this section tests that instinct before day one of the programme.
Not the way most applicants assume. Most XAT-accepting institutes leave GK marks out of the overall percentile and cutoff score they use.
XLRI is the exception. It uses your raw GK score separately, in its own final selection process (source: xatonline.in, XAT 2025 Overview document). Since other institutes leave GK out of the percentile they shortlist on, a weak GK section shouldn't affect your shortlisting chances there. At XLRI specifically, it can still factor into the final decision.
If you're prepping for both exams, this comparison lays out exactly where XAT breaks from CAT's format, starting with the two sections CAT doesn't have at all.
CAT vs XAT 🔥 Which MBA Exam Is Tougher? Complete Comparison & Verdict!
| Section | Key Topics |
|---|---|
| Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning | Reading comprehension (including cartoons and passage-based questions), vocabulary, English grammar, para-jumbles, cloze tests, critical and analytical reasoning |
| Decision Making | Data arrangement, conditioning and grouping, complex arrangement, caselets, assumptions, premises and conclusions drawn from real-life and workplace scenarios |
| Quantitative Aptitude & Data Interpretation | Arithmetic, algebra, geometry, mensuration, modern maths, plus data interpretation from tables, bar charts and pie charts |
| General Knowledge | 8 questions on static GK, 12 on current affairs |
(Source: xatonline.in, 2027.)
These four sections don't overlap much with each other. That's the real reason a single CAT prep plan doesn't work well here. For a topic-by-topic study plan built around this table, go to the XAT 2027 syllabus page.
XLRI hasn't announced an exact result date for XAT 2027 yet. Its own official website states results follow roughly three weeks after the test. That puts the result somewhere in the last week of January 2027. This is an estimate based on that stated gap, not a confirmed calendar date (source: xatonline.in/faq, 2027).
XLRI hasn't officially announced it, as of September 2026. XLRI's own statement puts it at "approximately three weeks after the exam." Expect it in late January 2027. Track the XAT 2027 result page for the confirmed date once XLRI publishes it.
Before the scorecard, you can expect a provisional XAT 2027 answer key inside your candidate login, based on the last two cycles. Cross-check your responses against it once it's out. You'll know roughly where your percentile stands before the official result confirms it.
Most first-time applicants get this wrong. XLRI doesn't publish a single, official "XAT cutoff" centrally. Your raw score converts to a percentile, roughly the share of all test-takers you scored above. Every accepting institute then sets its own shortlisting percentile independently. A 90 percentile can clear one college's shortlist and miss another's by a wide margin.
No. Each of the 250+ B-schools accepting XAT sets its own minimum percentile. Even within XAMI, XLRI's own programmes shortlist differently from other member institutes. Treat any single "XAT cutoff" number quoted elsewhere as one college's figure, not a universal bar. Check XAT 2027 cutoff for institute-wise numbers once institutes publish them for this cycle.
Clearing the written exam is only step one. XAT-accepting institutes, including XLRI, run their own Group Discussion, Written Ability Test or Personal Interview rounds after the exam (source: xatonline.in blog, "What Admission Panels Look For Beyond The XAT Score"). In the most recent published cycle, XLRI's own documentation also described an Analytical Essay Writing component. XLRI conducted this during the GD/PI stage itself, not as a separate written round (source: xatonline.in, XAT 2025 Overview document).
You wait for a shortlist based on your percentile and application profile. Then you attend whichever combination of Group Discussion, Written Ability Test and Personal Interview your shortlisted institute runs. Panels typically check your communication, career clarity and self-awareness alongside your written score. A strong XAT percentile gets you into the room. It isn't the only thing panels judge once you're there.
XLRI hosts its own past papers directly on xatonline.in. These cover 2018 through 2024 (source: xatonline.in, 2027). That's seven years of real, XLRI-set questions, not a coaching institute's guess at what XAT "usually" asks. Start there before you touch any third-party mock test.
Head to XAT 2027 previous year question paper for direct downloads and a year-wise breakdown of what changed each cycle.
Two sections here don't show up on any other MBA entrance exam. Your prep plan can't simply borrow a CAT strategy. Build your plan around what's actually different in XAT.
Start with the official past papers from 2018 to 2024. These are the most reliable source for question style, since XLRI itself set them. Practise Decision Making separately from Quant and Verbal. This section rewards judgment under pressure more than raw calculation speed.
Timed caselet practice matters more here than another round of formula revision. For General Knowledge, split your revision the way the exam does: 8 questions on static facts and 12 on current affairs. That's exactly how XLRI weights the section.
Time management inside the shared 170-minute window matters as much as accuracy. Since there are no sectional caps, decide beforehand how many minutes you'll give each of the three sections, and practice sticking to that split on your own.
Data sources: XAT official site xatonline.in, homepage, registration, FAQ and associate-institutions pages, all accessed September 2026), XLRI's XAT 2025 Overview document, and xatonline.in's official blog. All facts here carry the year they apply to. Where XLRI hasn't yet published a 2027-specific figure, it says so plainly, rather than assuming continuity.
