XAT 2027 has four sections: VALR, Decision Making, QA & DI, and GK. Three of these sections have a fixed topic list you can revise. Decision Making is different. It has no fixed topics. It tests your judgement instead.
This syllabus comes straight from XLRI's own published page for XAT 2027, on xatonline.in. We checked it on 12 September 2026. It covers four sections: VALR, Decision Making, QA & DI, and GK. Each section has its own topic list and its own weight in your final score. Decision Making is the one exception. The section below explains why.
Read this page section by section. You can build a real study plan from it, without opening a second tab. Every number here comes from XLRI itself, not from a coaching institute's estimate. This includes the XAT exam date, the question count, and the negative marking rule.
If you search for an "XAT 2027 syllabus PDF," you will find plenty of results that promise one. XLRI has not published a separate PDF for this cycle. The full section-wise syllabus is on xatonline.in's own exam pattern page instead, updated for XAT 2027.

VALR has 26 of the exam's 95 questions. It is the biggest section in XAT 2027.
XLRI's pattern page lists these topics: critical and analytical reasoning, reading comprehension, vocabulary, English grammar, para jumbles, and cloze tests. Reading comprehension covers more than plain prose passages. The official page also lists poems and cartoons as passage types, along with the usual argumentative and narrative pieces. Many prep guides do not mention poems and cartoons as passage types.
Topics under XAT 2027 VALR:
Reading comprehension and critical reasoning carry the most questions inside VALR. We base this on how the section has run over the last two cycles. Grammar, vocabulary, para jumbles, and cloze tests make up the rest. Each of these carries a smaller number of questions.
XLRI does not publish an exact question-by-topic split within VALR. Treat reading comprehension as your top priority. Treat the rest as steady, lower-weight practice.
Decision Making has 21 questions. This is the one section that makes XAT different from every other major MBA entrance exam in India.
This section has no formula to memorise. XLRI describes these as scenarios from personal and professional life. This section tests judgement, not calculation.
A question could be a small business case. It could be a conflict between two people who both have a fair point. You pick the option a sensible, ethical manager would choose. You do not pick the option that maximises a single number.
What DM tests:
Most DM questions give you a short scenario and four to five possible actions. You then pick which one is correct and why. Past XAT papers are the only real practice material for this section, according to XLRI's own advice. Working through the XAT 2027 question paper archive matters more here than for any other section.
Decision Making is the one XAT section that resists a formula. This walkthrough shows how to actually reason through the scenario-based questions this section throws at you.

QA & DI is the largest section by question count, with 28 of the 95 questions. Most students shorten this to "QADI." XLRI's own pattern page keeps the ampersand: QA & DI is the exact official name.
This name matters for how you prepare. XLRI groups arithmetic, algebra, geometry, mensuration and modern maths together with data interpretation, under one heading. XLRI combines pure maths and data reading into a single section here, not two separate ones.
Topics under XAT 2027 QA & DI:
No. XLRI includes Data Interpretation inside the same QA & DI section as arithmetic, algebra and geometry. Students coming from other exams are often surprised by this. Some other entrance exams run DI as a separate, standalone section. Plan your QA & DI prep as one combined block, not as two separate subjects.
General knowledge can sound like a broad, open-ended topic. But XAT 2027's GK section has a clear split: 8 static questions and 12 current affairs questions. VALR, DM and QA & DI do not have this kind of clean split inside their topic lists. GK does. Keep this split in mind when you plan your GK prep.
No, GK does not affect your percentile. XLRI's percentile and cutoff calculations leave GK out completely, according to its own exam pattern page. But GK is not useless. XLRI still uses it during selection, for its own programmes. Other XAT-accepting institutes do not use it this way. Keep this in mind when you decide how much time to give GK in your prep.
GK is 20 of XAT's 95 questions, split 8 static and 12 current affairs. This episode is a practical starting point for building that habit.

XAT 2027 runs for 180 minutes in total. XLRI splits this into two parts, not one continuous block. Part one gives 170 minutes to VALR, DM and QA & DI combined. Part two gives GK the last 10 minutes.
XLRI does not run a separate timer for each section inside this block, according to its own official website. You can move between VALR, DM and QA & DI in any order you like.
Marking scheme for XAT 2027:
Yes. XLRI confirms on its own official website that the exam screen includes a scientific calculator. You do not need to bring a physical calculator to the centre.
Every wrong answer in VALR, DM or QA & DI costs you 0.25 marks. Most students already expect this rule. The skip penalty is less well known. If you skip more than 8 questions across these three sections, each extra skip costs 0.1 marks. GK has no such penalty. GK has no penalty for a wrong answer, and none for skipping a question either.
The XAT exam pattern 2027 page has the complete section-by-section time and marks table in one view.
The XAT 2027 syllabus has not changed from the XAT 2026 cycle. Both years have the same four sections, the same topic lists, and the same marking scheme, according to XLRI's own pages.
No, XLRI made no major change. XLRI's XAT 2026 syllabus blog and the current XAT 2027 exam pattern page list the same section names. The question counts are close too: 26 in VALR, 21 in DM, 28 in QA & DI, and 20 in GK.
The marking scheme is identical as well. The GK split has not changed either. It is 8 static questions and 12 current-affairs questions in both years.
This shows stability, but only between the two most recent cycles. We did not check XLRI's older notifications, from XAT 2023 to XAT 2025. Treat any claim of a longer unbroken streak with caution, until we check that gap too.
XLRI's own study-strategy blog suggests four to six months of preparation. Plan for two to three hours a day, built around the syllabus above.
Word Power Made Easy by Norman Lewis for vocabulary, plus daily reading comprehension practice from past XAT papers. XLRI's own blog leans toward reading comprehension over grammar drills.
Solve at least 3 DM sets a day during peak preparation, per XLRI's own advice. Past XAT papers are the main source, since this section has no equivalent in other MBA entrance exams.
Arithmetic, algebra, geometry, mensuration and modern maths, backed by data interpretation sets pulled from previous XAT papers.
Build a monthly current-affairs habit alongside a static-GK reference. 12 of the 20 GK questions test current affairs, and only 8 test static knowledge.
Test yourself in the same 2 pm to 5 pm slot as the real exam. According to XLRI's own guidance, space your full mocks about every 10 to 12 days early in your prep. Tighten this to every 5 days as the exam date nears.
Past papers matter most for Decision Making, because this is the one section with no equivalent in other exams. Work through the XAT question paper 2027 archive instead. A generic decision-making guide, built for a different exam, will not help as much.
Where prep should start
Start with VALR and QA & DI, since they're familiar territory from other entrance exams. Decision Making is the section you can only train using XAT's own past papers. Give it dedicated time, not leftover time.
Answers to what readers ask most often.
Four: Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning (VALR), Decision Making (DM), Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation (QA & DI), and General Knowledge (GK). This is according to xatonline.in.
95 questions in total. That's 26 in VALR, 21 in DM, 28 in QA & DI, and 20 in GK, according to XLRI's official exam pattern page.
No, XLRI publishes the syllabus directly on xatonline.in, not as a separate PDF. Any 'download syllabus PDF' link on another site is that site's own summary, not an XLRI document.
No, GK carries no negative marking, and XLRI's percentile and cutoff calculations leave it out completely. XLRI still uses it during selection, but only for its own programmes.
