The GATE 2027 syllabus a candidate studies depends entirely on the paper chosen at the time of application. IIT Madras is the conducting institute for GATE 2027. It has released the syllabus for all 30 test papers, including the new Robotics and Automation (RA) paper. The official GATE 2027 website confirms the 2027 syllabi have been revised. Candidates should check the latest syllabus PDF before starting preparation. A Computer Science and Information Technology (CS) candidate studies Programming, Data Structures, Algorithms, Operating Systems, DBMS and Computer Networks. A Mechanical Engineering (ME) candidate follows a completely different syllabus built around Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics and Machine Design. One part of the syllabus stays common across every paper: General Aptitude (GA), worth 15 marks. The remaining marks come from the selected paper, and its topic distribution varies by subject.
IIT Madras publishes a separate syllabus PDF for each of the 30 GATE 2027 test papers. This page lists the syllabus for every major paper. It also covers the exam pattern, previous-year topic trends, and a preparation plan built around the official syllabus.
The official GATE 2027 website gives a separate syllabus PDF for each of the 30 papers.

No VARC or DILR sections in GATE
GATE does not have separate Verbal Ability, Data Interpretation or Quant sections like some management exams. It has one common General Aptitude section, and the rest of the paper depends on the subject chosen.
General Aptitude (GA) carries 15 marks in every GATE 2027 paper, with no exceptions. It is the one section every candidate studies, regardless of the paper chosen. The official syllabus divides GA into four areas: verbal, quantitative, analytical and spatial aptitude.
| Area | Important Topics |
|---|---|
| Verbal Aptitude | Grammar, vocabulary, idioms and phrases, reading comprehension, narrative sequencing |
| Quantitative Aptitude | Ratios, percentages, powers, exponents, logarithms, permutations, combinations, series |
| Data Interpretation | Graphs, tables, maps, 2D and 3D plots |
| Analytical Aptitude | Logic, analogy, induction, deduction, numerical relations |
| Spatial Aptitude | Shape transformation, rotation, mirroring, scaling, paper folding, patterns, 2D and 3D visualisation |
GA is a scoring opportunity
The GA syllabus is compact and common to every paper. Do not leave it for the last few weeks before the exam.
No, Engineering Mathematics is not a separate common section like General Aptitude. It sits inside the subject marks for many engineering papers, and its structure and marks depend on the paper. For Civil Engineering (CE), Computer Science (CS), Electrical Engineering (EE), Electronics and Communication (EC) and Mechanical Engineering (ME), Engineering Mathematics carries 13 marks within the official marking pattern.
The main areas across these papers are Linear Algebra, Calculus, Differential Equations, Probability and Statistics, Numerical Methods and Discrete Mathematics. The exact mix is paper-dependent. The GATE CS syllabus, for example, includes Discrete Mathematics, Linear Algebra, Calculus, and Probability and Statistics under this head.
These three papers do not follow the standard single-subject GATE structure. Each combines a common section with one or more optional sections the candidate chooses at the time of application.
How is the GATE XE syllabus structured? XE0 Engineering Mathematics is common to every XE candidate and carries 15 marks. Candidates then choose two optional sections, 35 marks each.
| Code | Section |
|---|---|
| XE0 | Engineering Mathematics (common) |
| XE1 | Fluid Mechanics |
| XE2 | Materials Science |
| XE3 | Solid Mechanics |
| XE4 | Thermodynamics |
| XE5 | Polymer Science and Engineering |
| XE6 | Food Technology |
| XE7 | Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences |
| XE8 | Energy Science |
| XE9 | Textile Engineering and Fibre Science |
The earlier Textile Engineering and Fibre Science section now carries the code XE9 for GATE 2027.
Break a long GATE syllabus into smaller topic groups instead of trying to memorise it in one go. The tabs below give a quick planning grouping for five popular papers. The full paper-wise syllabus follows in the accordion below.
C programming, Data structures, Algorithms, Operating systems, DBMS, Computer networks, Theory of Computation, Computer Organisation and Architecture, Digital Logic, Engineering Mathematics.
Use these lists for planning only
These topic groupings help with study planning. They do not replace the official GATE 2027 syllabus PDF for your paper.
The accordion below carries the complete subject-wise syllabus for seven papers: CSE, Data Science and AI, Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, Electronics and Communication, and Biotechnology.
GATE CSE 2027 is divided into core Computer Science subjects, Engineering Mathematics and General Aptitude.
| Subject | Important Topics |
|---|---|

What changed in the GATE CSE 2027 syllabus: Digital Logic now names algebraic, Karnaugh map and tabular minimisation methods directly, with circuit design stated more clearly. Computer Organisation and Architecture now names hardwired and microprogrammed control, memory interfacing, cache mapping and memory hierarchy performance. Computer Networks carries the biggest change. Several older topics were removed or reduced, and OSI and TCP/IP models, framing, ARP, DHCP, ICMP, UDP, SMTP, FTP and email are named separately. The 2027 syllabus focuses more on IPv4, routing, TCP flow and congestion control, the socket API, DNS and HTTP.
GATE DA 2027 has seven main subject areas plus General Aptitude.
| Subject | Main Topics |
|---|---|
| Probability and Statistics | Probability, distributions, Bayes theorem, hypothesis testing, confidence intervals |
| Linear Algebra | Vector spaces, matrices, eigenvalues, eigenvectors, LU decomposition, SVD |

GATE 2027 is a 3-hour computer-based test with 65 questions worth 100 marks.
| Exam Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Mode | Computer-Based Test |
| Duration | 3 hours |
| Questions | 65 |
| Total Marks | 100 |
| Question Types | MCQ, MSQ, NAT |
| Language | English |
| General Aptitude | 15 marks |
| Negative Marking | Applies only to incorrect MCQs |
Negative marking in GATE applies only to wrong answers on MCQs. A wrong 1-mark MCQ loses 1/3 mark, and a wrong 2-mark MCQ loses 2/3 mark. There is no negative marking for MSQ or NAT questions, and MSQ questions carry no partial marking either.
The table below shows the standard marks distribution for most engineering papers.
| Section | Marks |
|---|---|
| General Aptitude | 15 |
| Engineering Mathematics | 13 |
| Selected Subject | 72 |
| Total | 100 |
This distribution is not the same for every paper. Papers such as CY, DA, EY, MA, PH and ST follow 15 GA marks plus 85 subject marks, with no separate Engineering Mathematics head. AR, GE, GG, RA, XE, XH and XL follow their own special structures. See the GATE Exam Pattern page's full paper-type table for details.
The official GATE syllabus states the overall marks distribution. It does not publish a fixed subject-wise weightage for each topic. The number of questions from a given topic can vary from year to year. Previous-year questions (PYQs) help identify which areas get tested often, but a candidate should not fully skip low-frequency topics.
Analysis of previous GATE CSE papers shows Algorithms, Programming and Data Structures, Operating Systems, Computer Networks, DBMS, and Theory of Computation as regularly featured areas. The list below is a preparation priority, not an official GATE weightage.
This is a study priority, not GATE's official weightage
GATE does not publish topic-wise weightage. The ranked list above reflects how often topics have featured in previous GATE CSE papers, for planning purposes only.
Previous-paper analysis for GATE DA points to Programming and DSA, Probability and Statistics, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Linear Algebra, DBMS and Data Warehousing, and Calculus and Optimisation as the main prep areas. The DA syllabus has stayed the same from 2026 to 2027, which makes previous DA papers especially useful for practice.
A GATE syllabus turns into a workable plan when it is broken into a checklist.
Step 1
Start with the official syllabus PDF
Download your paper's 2027 syllabus, read every heading once, and mark the topics you already know. Do not start from random video playlists or old notes without checking them against the 2027 syllabus.
Step 2
Divide topics into three categories
Mark each topic Strong (already understood), Average (basics known, practice needed) or Weak (needs study from the start). Begin with topics that are both important and weak.
Step 3
Study one subject at a time
Avoid jumping between five subjects in a single day. Move through each topic in stages: Concept, Examples, PYQs, Short Notes, Revision.
Step 4
Solve previous-year questions right after each topic
Once a topic is done, solve its PYQs immediately. For example, solve DBMS normalisation questions right after finishing that topic.
Step 5
Keep a mistake notebook
Track wrong answers, forgotten formulas, confusing concepts, calculation errors and questions that took too long. Revise this notebook regularly.
Step 6
Do not ignore General Aptitude
GA carries 15 marks and is common across every paper. Even 20 to 30 minutes of GA practice a few times a week helps.
Step 7
Revise the syllabus before each mock test
Before a full mock, review completed topics, weak topics, untouched topics and topics with repeated mistakes. Use each mock's result to plan the next round of revision.
Start by downloading the official syllabus PDF for the chosen paper and reading every heading once. Mark which topics are already familiar before opening any book or video course.
