GATE 2027 carries 100 marks across 65 questions, runs for 3 hours, and covers 30 subject papers. IIT Madras conducts the exam. The other seven IITs and IISc Bangalore coordinate the exam with IIT Madras. The official brochure went live on 20 July 2026. The exam runs across multiple sessions over a few weekends in February 2027. It is a computer-based test (CBT), held on-screen at designated centres.
Two structural changes apply this cycle. A new paper, Robotics and Automation (RA), joins the list of 30 papers. The multi-section papers, XE, XH and XL, carry revised section codes and mark splits.
GATE 2027 is a 3-hour, 100-mark, computer-based test with 65 questions, spread across 30 subject papers. The table in the next section lists every fixed rule in one place.

Every GATE 2027 paper has two parts: General Aptitude and a subject-specific section. Most papers combine both into a single block. A few papers split the subject-specific part into a compulsory section and an optional section. Four papers, AR, GE, GG and RA, use a Part A and Part B structure instead.
General Aptitude carries 15 marks in every GATE 2027 paper, with no exceptions. It has 10 questions (five 1-mark and five 2-mark questions). It tests verbal ability and numerical ability.
The subject-specific section carries the remaining 85 marks. In most standard papers, it splits into two parts. A compulsory Engineering Mathematics part carries about 13 marks. Core subject questions carry the rest, about 72 marks.
| Paper Type | GA | Eng. Maths | Core Subject | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Most standard papers (CS, ME, EE, CE, EC, CH, IN, MT, PI and similar) | 15 | ~13 | ~72 | 100 |
| CY, DA, EY, MA, PH, ST | 15 | Not separate | 85 (single block) | 100 |
| AR, GE, GG, RA (Part A + Part B) | 15 | Not separate | 85 (split across A and B) | 100 |
| XE (multi-section) | 15 | 15 (compulsory) | 70 (2 optional sections) | 100 |
| XH (multi-section) | 15 | Not separate | 85 (compulsory + 1 optional) | 100 |
| XL (multi-section) | 15 | Not separate | 85 (compulsory + 2 optional) | 100 |
CY, DA, EY, MA, PH and ST give the full 85 marks to one subject-specific block. None of these papers has a separate Engineering Mathematics part. XH and XL use a compulsory-plus-optional format instead. AR, GE, GG and RA use a compulsory Part A and a choice-based Part B.
XE, XH and XL each pair a compulsory section with one or more optional sections that the candidate chooses.
The compulsory XE0 (Engineering Mathematics) section carries 15 marks. Candidates then choose 2 of the optional sections XE1 to XE9, worth 35 marks each, for 70 subject marks. XE9 (Textile Engineering and Fibre Science) is new for 2027. It replaces the earlier standalone TF paper.
In all three papers, 15 GA marks plus 85 subject marks add up to 100 total marks.
AR, GE, GG and RA split their subject-specific section into a compulsory Part A and a choice-based Part B.
| Paper | Part A (Compulsory) | Part B (Choose One Track) |
|---|---|---|
| AR | 60 marks | 25 marks: Architecture or Planning |
| GE | 55 marks | 30 marks: Surveying and Mapping, or Image Processing and Analysis |
| GG | 25 marks | 60 marks: Geology or Geophysics |
| RA | 60 marks: Engineering Maths, Mechatronics and Robotics | 25 marks: Electrical or Mechanical Engineering |
GATE 2027 offers 30 papers, one more than the previous cycle, after Robotics and Automation joined the list.

The standalone TF (Textile Engineering and Fibre Science) code is discontinued for 2027. It is now available only as XE9 inside the XE paper.
Yes, but only if the combination appears on IIT Madras's approved two-paper list. A candidate cannot pick any two papers freely. The two papers are held in separate time slots, so check the admit card for clashes. A candidate submits only one GATE application; the second paper gets added to that same application, not submitted separately.
GATE 2027 uses three question formats: MCQ, MSQ and NAT. Every question is worth either 1 or 2 marks.
| Question Type | Structure | Negative Marking |
|---|---|---|
| MCQ | 4 options, 1 correct answer | Yes |
| MSQ | 4 options, 1 or more correct; all correct options must be selected | No |
| NAT | No options; answer is typed on the on-screen keypad | No |
The 65 questions split into 10 GA questions and 55 subject-specific questions.
| Section | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| General Aptitude | 10 (5 x 1-mark + 5 x 2-mark) | 15 |
| Subject-specific (including Eng. Maths where applicable) | 55 | 85 |
| Total | 65 | 100 |
Each optional section in XE (XE1 to XE9) has 22 questions (9 one-mark plus 13 two-mark questions), worth 35 marks. Each optional section in XL (XL1 to XL5) has 19 questions (8 one-mark plus 11 two-mark questions), worth 30 marks. The compulsory XL0 (Chemistry) section has 17 questions (9 one-mark plus 8 two-mark questions), worth 25 marks.
No, GATE 2027 does not publish a fixed ratio of MCQ, MSQ and NAT questions. The mix varies by subject. Calculation-heavy branches lean toward NAT questions. Theory-heavy branches lean toward MCQs.
A worked example shows how the marks add up. Say a candidate attempts 40 subject questions correctly, gets 10 MCQs wrong, and leaves 5 questions unattempted. All 40 correct questions score full marks. Each wrong MCQ loses a small fraction of its own mark. The 5 unattempted questions cost nothing at all.
No, leaving an uncertain MCQ blank is often safer than guessing. A wrong MCQ costs marks, while a blank one costs nothing.
GATE 2027 has no sectional time limit. The full 180 minutes cover General Aptitude and the subject section together, under one continuous timer.
65 questions in 180 minutes work out to about 2.75 minutes per question, on average. This is a rough guide only. A 2-mark NAT or MSQ question usually needs more time than a 1-mark MCQ.
Budget time by question type and difficulty, not by a fixed per-question rule. Flag long or uncertain questions and come back to them near the end of the 180 minutes.
PwD candidates get 20 minutes of compensatory time per hour of exam, as stated in the official brochure.
Request compensatory time in advance
PwD candidates must request and get confirmation for compensatory time during the application itself. It is not given automatically on exam day.
Negative marking in GATE 2027 applies only to MCQs. MSQ and NAT questions carry no negative marking, in either direction. No question type gets partial marks.
| Question Type | Correct | Wrong | Unattempted |
|---|---|---|---|
| MCQ (1 mark) | +1 | -1/3 | 0 |
| MCQ (2 marks) | +2 | -2/3 | 0 |
| MSQ (1 or 2 marks) | Full marks | 0 | 0 |
| NAT (1 or 2 marks) | Full marks | 0 | 0 |
Three wrong 1-mark MCQs cancel out one correct 1-mark MCQ (3 x -1/3 = -1). Three wrong 2-mark MCQs cancel out close to two correct 2-mark MCQs (3 x -2/3 = -2). Random guessing on MCQs carries a negative expected value over many attempts.
No, only the final selection at the time of submission counts. An answer marked "for review" but left unanswered still counts as unattempted, and scores zero.
No, an MSQ needs an exact match. Selecting only some correct options scores zero. Selecting one wrong option along with correct ones also scores zero, not partial credit.
MSQ has no partial credit
An MSQ scores zero if even one selected option is wrong, or if a correct option is left unselected. Select all correct options and nothing else.
Attempt an MCQ only when at least 1 or 2 wrong options can be ruled out. Attempt MSQ and NAT questions whenever reasonably confident, since neither carries a penalty for a wrong attempt.
The penalty is proportional to the marks on offer. A wrong 2-mark MCQ loses more (2/3) than a wrong 1-mark MCQ (1/3). This marking pattern has stayed stable across recent cycles, and the official GATE 2027 brochure confirms the same rules apply this year.
The GATE 2027 syllabus covers General Aptitude, Engineering Mathematics where applicable, and the core subject for each paper.
General Aptitude covers Verbal Ability (grammar, sentence completion, verbal reasoning, word meaning, reading comprehension) and Numerical Ability (arithmetic, data interpretation, and reasoning with numbers and graphs).
Engineering Mathematics covers Linear Algebra, Calculus, Differential Equations, Probability and Statistics, and Numerical Methods. It forms a common base for most engineering papers, plus the compulsory XE0 section. It is typically worth 13 to 15 marks.
The core subject section covers discipline-specific topics. These make up the bulk of the 85-mark section. CS covers Data Structures and Algorithms, ME covers Thermodynamics and Machine Design, and EE covers Power Systems and Control Systems.
Candidates in XE, XH and XL choose optional sections that match their own background. An XE candidate might pick Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics. An XL candidate might pick Botany and Zoology.
IIT Madras revised the syllabus for all 30 subjects for 2027, the first major change in about 5 years. Candidates should check old study material against the official 2027 syllabus PDF, since some topics were added, reworded or dropped. This section is a summary; the full topic list sits on the dedicated GATE 2027 syllabus page.

Syllabus revised across all 30 papers
IIT Madras revises syllabus content for 2027. Marks and question structure stay unchanged.
No, 100 marks, 65 questions and 3 hours have stayed constant across recent GATE cycles.
The paper list, the multi-section organisation of XE, XH and XL, and the syllabus content change the most. The core marks-and-duration format stays fixed year after year.
General Aptitude has stayed at 15 marks in every GATE paper, every cycle, with no exception.
No, Engineering Mathematics has held in the 13 to 15 mark range for most standard papers, cycle after cycle.
Yes, the share of NAT and MSQ questions has grown into a meaningful part of the paper. Real problem-solving now matters more than simple recognition of the right option.
No, RA matches the surface numbers: 65 questions, 100 marks, 3 hours. Internally, it uses the same Part A plus Part B format as AR, GE and GG.
Not every year. XE, XH and XL periodically get their optional codes and mark splits revised, as happened for 2027. The overall 100-mark, two-part format stays constant across these revisions.
