JEE Main 2027 Syllabus for Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech)

What subjects are covered in JEE Main Paper 1?

Paper 1 is designed for students seeking admission to B.E. and B.Tech programs. It consists of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. The Paper 1 syllabus broadly covers concepts taught across Classes 11 and 12, as specified in the official NTA syllabus.

Instead of treating the chapters as completely separate topics, you should try to understand their relations and common concepts, and leverage that to study in a streamlined manner. For example, Mechanics concepts in Physics build the base for several later topics, while algebra and calculus support many areas of Mathematics.

Check out the core concepts covered in the JEE Main 2027 Subject-wise syllabus, the table below gives you the broad structure of these subjects:

SubjectMajor syllabus areas
MathematicsAlgebra, Calculus, Coordinate Geometry, 3D Geometry, Vector Algebra, Statistics, Probability and Trigonometry

JEE Main 2027 Subject and Paper-wise Syllabus

What topics are covered chapter-wise in each subject?

A good strategy is to avoid studying only by reading formulas. You need regular problem-solving practice. Once you finish a unit, solve JEE Main-level questions before moving on.

Mathematics is usually one of the most calculation-intensive sections of Paper 1. The syllabus combines algebra, calculus, coordinate geometry and other areas of mathematics.

Unit/ChapterImportant topics covered
Sets, Relations and FunctionsSets, relations, types of relations, functions, composition of functions
Complex Numbers and Quadratic EquationsComplex numbers, Argand plane, modulus, argument, quadratic equations, roots
Matrices and DeterminantsTypes of matrices, determinants, inverse and adjoint, systems of linear equations
Permutations and CombinationsFundamental principle, permutations, combinations and applications
Binomial TheoremExpansion, general term and simple applications
Sequence and SeriesArithmetic progression, geometric progression, special series
Limits, Continuity and DifferentiabilityLimits, continuity, derivatives and differentiability
Integral CalculusIndefinite integration, definite integration and applications
Differential EquationsFormation and solution of differential equations
Coordinate GeometryStraight lines, circles, parabola, ellipse and hyperbola
Three Dimensional GeometryCoordinates, direction ratios, direction cosines, planes and lines
Vector AlgebraVectors, scalar and vector products and applications
Statistics and ProbabilityMeasures of dispersion, probability, conditional probability and distributions
TrigonometryTrigonometric functions, identities, equations and inverse trigonometric functions

These units form the core of the JEE Main Mathematics syllabus. The official syllabus also gives the specific concepts under each unit, so use the NTA document while making your final chapter checklist.

JEE Main 2027 Exam Pattern and Syllabus Weightage

How is the JEE Main syllabus tested in the exam?

Knowing the syllabus is only half the preparation. You should also understand how the topics are tested. Please note that the exam pattern given below is based on the latest available JEE Main exam pattern and is provided as a reference for 2027 preparation. NTA may modify the pattern for JEE Main 2027.

Based on the latest available pattern, Paper 1 has 75 questions carrying 300 marks. Each subject has 25 questions, with 20 multiple-choice questions and 5 numerical-value questions.

ParticularPaper 1: B.E./B.TechPaper 2A: B.ArchPaper 2B: B.Planning
SubjectsPhysics, Chemistry, MathematicsMathematics, Aptitude, DrawingMathematics, Aptitude, Planning
Total questions7577100
Total marks300400400
Duration3 hours3 hours3 hours
ModeComputer Based TestCBT + offline DrawingComputer Based Test
Correct answer+4+4+4
Incorrect answer−1−1−1

NTA can revise the examination pattern, so you should treat these figures as the latest available reference rather than assuming that every detail is permanently fixed for 2027. The official 2027 information bulletin should be checked when released.

Does JEE Main publish an official chapter-wise weightage?

No. NTA does not publish official chapter-wise weightage. The topics below are priority areas based on previous-year question trends and should not be treated as a substitute for completing the full syllabus.

There is no official fixed chapter-wise weightage for JEE Main. The number of questions from a chapter can change from one shift to another. However, the list below is majorly constructed based on the previous-year question trends and can help you decide where to spend more revision time.

SubjectChapters/topics that deserve strong preparation
MathematicsCalculus, Coordinate Geometry, Matrices and Determinants, Vector Algebra, 3D Geometry, Probability and Statistics
PhysicsCurrent Electricity, Electrostatics, Optics, Modern Physics, Thermodynamics, Mechanics, Magnetism
ChemistryChemical Bonding, Coordination Compounds, Thermodynamics, Equilibrium, Electrochemistry, Organic Chemistry and selected Inorganic Chemistry units

Treat this table as a priority guide, not a syllabus shortcut. A chapter with historically high question frequency can still have fewer questions in a particular shift. Every chapter mentioned in the official syllabus remains relevant. You are advised to complete the full syllabus before prioritizing important chapters.

The smarter approach is to finish the syllabus once and then use previous-year questions to identify the areas where you lose marks.

How to Prepare JEE Main 2027 Syllabus

How should you divide your JEE Main 2027 study time?

You are advised to not try to finish the entire syllabus in a few weeks. JEE Main preparation works better when you divide your study time into learning, practice followed by revision.

Start with the chapters you are currently studying in school or coaching, if applicable. This prevents your Class 11 and Class 12 preparation from becoming disconnected. Once a certain topic is covered conceptually, you can move on to solve JEE Main-level questions from that chapter.

Preparation stageWhat you should focus on
Syllabus mappingDivide the complete syllabus into manageable chapters
Concept buildingLearn theory and understand important formulas
Question practiceSolve JEE Main questions after every chapter
RevisionRevise formulas, reactions, concepts and mistakes
PYQsPractice previous-year questions chapter-wise and then as full papers
Mock testsAttempt timed tests to improve speed and accuracy
Final revisionFocus on weak chapters, formulas and frequently made mistakes

The biggest mistake students often make is leaving revision for the end. So, make sure you keep your revision strategy as intact and active as possible. Most students prefer revising as they finish each chapter. Others prefer having a certain time gap between when they actually first picked the concept and its revision. Keep a small error notebook too. Write down the questions you got wrong and why you got them wrong.

How should your preparation strategy change as the exam nears?

Your preparation strategy should change as you move closer to the exam. No one strategy is proven to cater to all the students, so try and be mindful of what works well for you, from learning habits, retaining patterns to your study environment and topics you find difficult.

In the beginning, spend more time learning the concepts. That shall help you build a stronger foundation, which works well while dealing with diverse set of questions relevant to a single concept. In the middle phase, shift towards question practice and previous-year questions. During the final phase, focus on revision and mock tests, while assessing your weaker areas and sectional time management.

For Physics, understand the concept and then solve numerical questions. For Chemistry, balance NCERT reading with question practice. For Mathematics, practice regularly because speed improves only when you solve enough questions and deal with different set and framings of questions.

Do not ignore an entire subject because you find it difficult. JEE Main Paper 1 gives equal weightage to Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in terms of marks. A weak subject can pull down your overall score even if your other two subjects are strong.

Is NCERT enough, or do you need other books?

NCERT books are especially useful for Chemistry and also provide the basic concepts required for Physics and Mathematics. However, JEE Main preparation should not stop at NCERT. There are numerous reference and preparation books recommended by teachers and experts. Do not try and collect every resource and book, just to hoard them up. You should use some selected set of books for your preparation so that you do not feel overwhelmed trying to finish them all.

ResourceBest use
NCERTFundamental concepts, definitions and Chemistry preparation
JEE Main PYQsUnderstanding question patterns and difficulty
Reference booksAdditional practice and difficult concepts
Mock testsSpeed, accuracy and exam management
Revision notesQuick revision before tests and the exam

You do not need five books for every subject. One good source of theory, one reliable question bank and JEE Main previous-year questions are usually more useful than collecting too many resources.

What common syllabus mistakes should you avoid?

One common mistake is preparing from an outdated syllabus. Another is spending weeks on a single difficult chapter while ignoring the rest of the syllabus. A good JEE Main score does not come from knowing only the "most important" chapters. It comes from combining syllabus coverage, accuracy, speed and revision.

MistakeBetter approach
Studying without checking the syllabusKeep the NTA syllabus beside you
Ignoring Class 11 topicsCover both Class 11 and Class 12
Only reading theorySolve questions after every topic
Skipping PYQsPractice previous-year questions regularly
Focusing only on high-weightage chaptersComplete the full syllabus first
Taking mocks only at the endStart timed tests once enough syllabus is covered
Ignoring mistakesMaintain an error log and revise it

A common strategy followed by most students for JEE Main 2027 is to break the syllabus into subjects, units and chapters. Trying to grasp the whole syllabus in one go by memorizing it is a nice goal but not practical. Start with the latest official NTA syllabus available and update your preparation once the 2027 syllabus is released. Complete the syllabus first. Then use PYQs, mock tests and revision to improve your score. Most importantly, do not let the size of the syllabus overwhelm you. A chapter completed properly is far more useful than five chapters studied halfway.
