UCEED, the Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design, is a national-level entrance test. It decides admission into the 4-year Bachelor of Design (B.Des) programme at seven design institutes in India. It tests a mix of skills a normal school exam never touches: spatial reasoning, visual observation, sketching and design sensitivity. One 3-hour paper is the only gateway into these seats.
The exam matters to one specific group: a Class 12 student from any stream. This is a student who wants to study product, communication or industrial design at a government-run design school. That is different from choosing engineering or a straight fine-arts course. NID and MIT Institute of Design (MITID) each run their own separate entrance exam, and neither accepts a UCEED score. UCEED is a different exam from both.
This page is the starting point for everything about UCEED 2027, the exam's next edition. It explains what the test covers, who conducts it, what is already confirmed for 2027, and what is still pending. The linked pages below go deeper into each part.

IIT Bombay conducts it through its UCEED-CEED Office. Seven institutes together offer the Bachelor of Design (B.Des) programme through UCEED: IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Indore, IIT Roorkee and IIITDM Jabalpur. A candidate's UCEED performance is the only route into any of these 245 B.Des seats.
The B.Des programme runs for 4 years at each institute. It trains students in design disciplines such as product design, communication design, mobility and vehicle design, and user experience. The exact disciplines depend on where a student studies. People often expect NID and MIT Institute of Design (MITID) to be on this list of seven institutes. Both are equally well-known design schools. Neither is part of this list, and neither accepts a UCEED score.
NID and MITID are not UCEED institutes
NID (National Institute of Design) runs its own separate exam, the NID DAT. MIT Institute of Design (MITID) in Pune runs its own MITID DAT followed by a Studio Test and interview. Neither uses a UCEED score for admission.
Beyond these 7 direct institutes, roughly 44 to 47 other design schools also accept UCEED scores. They use it as one input in their own separate admission process. These include BITS Design School, CEPT University, FLAME University, Nirma University, Srishti Manipal, Bennett University, VIT, MAHE Manipal, DTU, NSUT and Anant National University. They are called result-sharing institutes, and UCEED's own centralised admission process does not cover them. See the full list of UCEED 2027 colleges for details.
UCEED 2027 has one confirmed date so far: the exam itself, on Sunday, 17 January 2027, in the forenoon session. IIT Bombay announced this on 25 May 2026, well ahead of the rest of the cycle. Registration dates, the application fee and the full 2027 brochure are not out yet.
UCEED 2027 full brochure yet to release
as of 14 September 2026IIT Bombay has confirmed only the UCEED 2027 exam date so far. The full brochure, with registration dates and fee, is expected around 1 October 2026.

UCEED eligibility has two separate layers. One is who can sit the exam. The other is what a candidate additionally needs for admission at a specific institute. The figures below are from the UCEED 2026 cycle. 2027-specific cutoffs, like exact birth-date windows, have not been announced yet.
Open, EWS and OBC-NCL candidates must be born on or after 1 October 2001. SC, ST and PwD candidates must be born on or after 1 October 1996.
A candidate must be appearing in Class 12 or equivalent for the first time, in 2025 or 2026. There is a narrow exception for boards that declared 2023-24 results after 30 September 2024. Anyone who first appeared in 2024 or earlier is not eligible.
The exam itself is open to Science, Commerce and Arts & Humanities students alike. Admission is a separate matter. IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Hyderabad and IIT Indore accept all streams for admission. IIT Guwahati and IIT Roorkee require Physics-Chemistry-Mathematics (PCM), and IIITDM Jabalpur requires PCM or Physics-Chemistry-Biology (PCB).
A candidate can attempt UCEED a maximum of two times, in consecutive years. There is no minimum qualifying mark for exam eligibility itself.
UCEED 2027 registration has not opened yet. The portal and dates will go live only once the 2027 brochure is out, expected around 1 October 2026. Going by how the 2026 cycle worked, registration will be entirely online on the official UCEED website. The fee will depend on gender and category.

A candidate gets the UCEED admit card only by logging into their own portal account. It is never posted anywhere public. In the 2026 cycle, admit card download opened on 2 January 2026 through the Candidate Portal (uceedapp.iitb.ac.in). Candidates used the same registration ID and password they had created while applying.
The admit card carries the candidate's name, UCEED registration ID, roll number, date of birth, category, photograph and signature. It also shows the exam date, shift and centre address.
Printed admit card is required at the centre
UCEED test centres require a printed copy of the admit card along with a valid original photo ID before entry. The centre also records a photograph and thumb impression on the spot.
UCEED 2027's own admit card date is not announced yet and will follow this same portal-based process once released.
UCEED 2027 has not published its own pattern yet. The structure below is from the confirmed UCEED 2026 brochure, the latest one available. The exam runs for 3 hours in a single sitting. It is split into two parts, Part A and Part B, worth 300 marks together.
Computer-based, maximum 2 hours, 200 marks. Made up of three question-type sections: NAT (Numerical Answer Type), MSQ (Multiple Select Question) and MCQ (Multiple Choice Question).
Together, Part A and Part B add up to 59 questions and 300 marks. Both parts run in one continuous 3-hour session, entirely in English.
The UCEED 2026 question pattern breaks Part A into three distinct question types, each marked differently. This is where many first-time test-takers get their strategy wrong.
14 questions, 4 marks each, 56 marks total. Answered by typing a number on a virtual keyboard. No negative marking.
15 questions, 60 marks total, with a partial-credit scheme. Full marks (+4) go for all correct options chosen with none incorrect, +3 for 3 of 4 correct, +2 for 2 correct options chosen with none incorrect, and +1 for 1 correct option chosen with none incorrect. The score is 0 if left unanswered, and -1 in every other case.
28 questions, 3 marks each, 84 marks total, single correct answer out of 4 choices. Each wrong answer costs 0.71 marks, an unusually precise negative-marking value confirmed directly from the brochure.
Two subjective, hand-drawn questions worth 50 marks each, evaluated manually by at least two examiners. If their scores differ by 10 marks or less, the average is taken. A bigger gap triggers a third, moderating evaluation.
Part A alone adds up to 57 questions and 200 marks. UCEED also releases a UCEED answer key for Part A after the exam. A candidate can use it to check these exact marking rules against their own recorded responses.
UCEED's brochure describes seven broad Part-A areas and two Part-B areas, in its own words. It treats them as indicative, not as a fixed checklist. UCEED does not publish a topic-by-topic syllabus the way some other exams do.
The brochure's own disclaimer
UCEED's official brochure states: "These topics are exhaustive and indicative of the nature of the questions. However, UCEED 2026 may not cover all the above mentioned topics." Read the list above as a guide to the kind of questions asked, not a fixed checklist to complete.
For a deeper, topic-wise breakdown of how these areas map to actual questions, see the full UCEED syllabus 2027.
UCEED converts a candidate's performance into an All India Rank (AIR), not a percentile. Nothing on the scorecard shows a percentile figure.
UCEED gives a rank, not a percentile
UCEED admission runs on All India Rank (AIR). If two candidates tie on total marks, the tie is broken first by Part-B marks, then by Part-A Section 2, then by Part-A Section 1.
In the 2026 cycle, IIT Bombay declared the result on 6 March 2026. It was visible only after logging into the candidate portal. UCEED does not publish a public rank list, for any year. Scorecards stayed downloadable from the portal between 10 March and 31 July 2026. The UCEED office also keeps a digital copy on file for up to 5 years. UCEED 2027's own result date is not announced yet, and it will follow this same portal-only pattern.
UCEED uses a statistical shortlisting formula to decide who is considered further. This is not a single published "cutoff rank" like some other exams use. This formula is recalculated fresh every year from that year's own marks distribution.
Institute-wise closing ranks are not published
IIT Bombay does not release a public, institute-wise or category-wise closing-rank table for UCEED, for any year checked. Any specific closing-rank figure found online is a third-party estimate, not an official IIT Bombay number.
The shortlisting formula itself is public. For the OPEN category, the cutoff mark equals the mean plus half the standard deviation of that year's Part-A marks (mean + sigma/2). OBC-NCL and EWS candidates get a relaxed cutoff at 0.9 times that value. SC, ST and PwD candidates get a cutoff at 0.5 times that value. This formula recalculates every year from a fresh distribution, so there is no fixed percentage anywhere in the brochure. For the full mechanism and how it feeds into admission, see UCEED cutoff 2027.
Getting a UCEED rank is only step one. Admission itself runs on rank, category, and a candidate's own institute and programme preferences. The UCEED Office at IIT Bombay runs this centralised counselling process directly, across all 7 institutes.
In the 2026 cycle, the B.Des admission application window ran from 14 March to 10 April 2026. This was followed by 5 rounds of seat allocation, tentatively dated 21 April, 19 May, 10 June, 24 June and 9 July 2026. This process is conceptually similar to JoSAA, the centralised counselling for B.Tech and B.Arch seats. But it is administratively separate, and it covers only these 7 B.Des seats. A candidate who accepts a seat pays Rs 60,000 (General, EWS, OBC-NCL) or Rs 15,000 (SC, ST, PwD) as a seat-acceptance fee.
The roughly 44 to 47 result-sharing institutes mentioned earlier sit outside this centralised process entirely. Each runs its own separate admission cycle, using a candidate's UCEED score only as one input alongside its own criteria.
UCEED publishes its actual past question papers and final answer keys for students to practise with. Many other entrance exams keep their real papers private and offer only vague sample sets instead.
UCEED publishes its real past papers
UCEED's official Downloads page carries the actual question paper and final answer key for every year from 2015 through 2026. There is no separate 'sample paper' or mock test product; these real past papers are the practice material.
This makes the UCEED question papers the most reliable practice resource available. Every paper on that page is the exact one candidates sat for that year, not a reconstruction.
UCEED does not have an official reading list or a fixed set of recommended books. The best starting point is strategy, not a list of books to buy.
Part A rewards accuracy discipline more than raw speed. It gives 2 hours for 57 questions across three differently-marked formats. There is no penalty on NAT, partial credit on MSQ, and a 0.71-mark penalty per wrong MCQ. Guessing on MCQs is the costliest habit to carry into this exam. Part B gives just 1 hour for two hand-drawn questions worth 50 marks each. Practising to a clock matters more than any single reference book. Use only the permitted black pencils and an optional A4 board.
Attempt NAT questions first since there is no negative marking, then the MCQs you are fully sure of. Treat MSQ carefully: partial credit rewards confidence on individual options, but an all-wrong guess still costs a mark.
Practise both the Sketching and Design Aptitude questions inside the actual 1-hour limit. Split your time roughly evenly across the two 50-mark questions. Use only the materials UCEED permits: black pencils and an optional A4 writing board.
UCEED publishes its real papers back to 2015. Work through several full papers under exam-day timing before relying on any third-party guide.
UCEED itself publishes the UCEED previous year question papers going back to 2015. That makes them the single most reliable preparation resource.
A few questions come up more than any other when someone hears about UCEED for the first time.
Answers to what readers ask most often.
No, NID does not accept UCEED scores. NID runs its own separate exam, the NID DAT (Design Aptitude Test), through its own admissions portal. A UCEED score has no role in NID's admission process.
Data Sources: NID official admissions portal (admissions.nid.edu)
No, MITID does not accept UCEED either. It runs its own MITID DAT, followed by a Studio Test and interview. MITID, the Pune design school, is a different institution from other MIT-named universities that do appear on UCEED's result-sharing list.
Data Sources: UCEED 2026 official result-sharing institute list; MITID official admissions process
It's an All India Rank (AIR), not a percentile. UCEED never converts a candidate's marks into a percentile figure. Ties are broken using Part-B marks first, then Part-A Section 2, then Part-A Section 1.
Data Sources: UCEED 2026 Information Brochure, results section
UCEED admits students to seven institutes only. They are IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Indore, IIT Roorkee and IIITDM Jabalpur, offering 245 B.Des seats in the 2026 cycle. Around 44 to 47 other design schools separately accept a UCEED score as one input in their own admission process.
