GMAC publishes no unit-wise GMAT exam syllabus and no topic weightage, because the test checks reasoning skills. GMAC does publish a content list for each of the three sections. The GMAT exam syllabus 2027 below follows that list, and GMAC has announced no change to it.
So the GMAT exam syllabus has no chapter list to finish and tick off. You prepare by question type, and you measure progress with practice exams.
There is no official GMAT syllabus PDF
2026-10-20GMAC publishes the content list on the exam content page of mba.com, not as a PDF. Treat any file called a GMAT syllabus PDF as unofficial.

A GMAT syllabus PDF shared online is not an official GMAC document. It may list topics, marks or weightage that GMAC has never published.
No. The GMAT exam syllabus is published as a content list on mba.com. The Official Guide 2026-2027 is written by GMAC and published in May 2026. It adds review chapters for each section. It is a book, not a free syllabus PDF. The free Starter Kit adds 70+ official questions.
Follow these steps.
GMAC sets the GMAT exam syllabus. One test serves MBA and other business master's applicants. The table gives the main points.

The official list names arithmetic and elementary algebra, reading and argument skills, and data skills. GMAC says the exam does not test vocabulary or grammar.
Several things are not in the GMAT exam syllabus at all:
The GMAT exam syllabus for 2027 is the current content list on the GMAC exam content page. Quantitative Reasoning has Problem Solving on arithmetic and elementary algebra. Verbal Reasoning has Reading Comprehension and Critical Reasoning. Data Insights has five question types. GMAC says the exam tests logic and analytical skills, not subject knowledge.
No. The GMAT exam syllabus has no official topic-wise weightage. GMAC publishes only the number of questions in each section: 21, 23 and 20. The three sections count equally in the Total Score. Any topic percentage you see online is not an official figure.
No. CAT is a separate test. The GMAT exam has its own content list from GMAC, with a Data Insights section and no essay. Check each test's own official list.
There is no official comparison. Choose the test by the programmes you want, because each school names the tests it accepts.

The Quantitative Reasoning section of the GMAT exam syllabus has 21 Problem Solving questions on arithmetic and elementary algebra. GMAC publishes no weightage by topic. Problem Solving is the only question type here. You get 45 minutes, and you cannot use a calculator.
GMAC says answering these questions correctly relies on logic and analytical skills, not the underlying maths skills. The Official Guide groups its Math Review into four chapters.
The fourth chapter title lists six areas, from Statistics to Series. Give it practice time, because one chapter covers many question styles.
In the GMAT exam syllabus, the Quant section tests arithmetic and elementary algebra through multiple choice Problem Solving questions. The four chapter titles show the areas GMAC groups together. Work on speed with plain arithmetic, because the calculator is not available in this section.
GMAC's content page for the GMAT exam syllabus names arithmetic and elementary algebra only. The four Math Review chapter titles do not name geometry either. Check the official sample questions before you decide how much time to give any topic.
The Verbal Reasoning section of the GMAT exam syllabus has 23 questions in 45 minutes. Reading Comprehension and Critical Reasoning are the two question types. GMAC does not split the questions between them.
| Question type | What GMAC lists |
|---|---|
| Reading Comprehension | Main idea, supporting idea, inference, application, logical structure, style |
| Critical Reasoning | Strengthen, weaken, flaw, support, plan evaluation |
Every question has five answer options. Critical Reasoning passages are usually fewer than 100 words. The same book groups its Verbal Review into Analyzing Passages, Inductive Reasoning and Deductive Reasoning.
Each item in the Verbal part of the GMAT exam syllabus is a way of thinking, not a topic. Main idea and inference are reading skills. Strengthen and weaken are argument skills. You build them by doing questions and checking why an answer is right.
It tests how well you read and reason, not how many words you know. Reading Comprehension passages test your grasp of ideas. GMAC says the GMAT exam does not test vocabulary or grammar. Sentence Correction is not part of the current Verbal section. Practise reading passages for structure and testing arguments for gaps.
The Data Insights section of the GMAT exam syllabus has 20 questions in 45 minutes. It has five question types, and GMAC does not split the questions between them. This is the only section with an on-screen calculator.
Some questions have several parts. You must answer every part correctly to get credit for that question. The same book groups its Data Insights Review into Data Sets and Types, Data Displays and Data Patterns.
The GMAT exam syllabus names five types for Data Insights. This section replaced the older Integrated Reasoning section.
Look at one official example of each type on the sample questions page before you start any timed practice.
GMAC names no important topics in the GMAT exam syllabus. The GMAT syllabus for MBA applicants is skill based, and the GMAT syllabus 2027 keeps that approach. Your own practice results decide which topics matter most for you. The three sections carry equal weight in the Total Score.
| Section | Calculator | Tools |
|---|---|---|
| Quantitative Reasoning | Not allowed | Noteboard or whiteboard |
| Verbal Reasoning | Not allowed | Noteboard or whiteboard |
| Data Insights | On-screen calculator | Noteboard or whiteboard |
The topics where you lose the most questions are the most important for you. GMAC publishes no list of high-yield topics. Use this method for the GMAT exam syllabus. It builds on GMAC's own study route.
The Official Score Report for the real exam also breaks results down by content domain, question type and fundamental skills. That report helps if you plan a retake.
The GMAT syllabus 2027 sits inside a fixed pattern of 64 questions and three 45-minute sections. The total time is 2 hours 15 minutes plus one optional 10-minute break.
| Section | Questions | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Quantitative Reasoning | 21 | 45 min |
| Verbal Reasoning | 23 | 45 min |
| Data Insights | 20 | 45 min |
The GMAT exam syllabus carries no marks split by topic. The marking scheme has no marks per question and no published negative marking. The score depends on question difficulty and on the number of questions you leave unanswered. The total score runs from 205 to 805. The full rules are on the GMAT exam pattern page.
The content structure of the GMAT exam syllabus has not changed since the exam launched in November 2023. GMAC has announced no 2027 change. The Official Guide 2026-2027 still follows the same three sections.
The current exam differs from the retired 10th Edition in these areas.
No. GMAC has announced no change to the GMAT syllabus 2027 as of 20 Oct 2026. GMAC says its terms and rules are subject to change, so recheck the exam content page before you book.
Use them with care. Old books may cover essay or Integrated Reasoning material that the current exam does not have. Use books that match the three current sections. The GMAT books 2027 page lists the current options, with official material first.
Preparation for the GMAT syllabus for MBA entry starts with GMAC's own advice. Plan your GMAT syllabus 2027 study around it. Study for at least six weeks. Most test takers prepare for 60 hours or more, which is about 10 hours a week over six weeks. Short sessions of 30 to 60 minutes work better than long, rare ones.
Here is a six-week plan built on GMAC's own route. It is our suggestion, not a GMAC schedule.
| Week | Focus | Material |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Exam structure, question types, baseline | Starter Kit, Practice Exam 1 |
| 2 to 3 | Your weakest section | Answer explanations, Official Guide |
| 4 to 5 | The other two sections | Official Guide, Review books |
| 6 | Full simulation under test conditions | Practice Exam 2 |
Use GMAC material first for the GMAT exam syllabus. The Starter Kit is free and has 70+ official questions. The Official Guide 2026-2027 has 975+ real exam questions. More official questions are listed on the GMAT question papers 2027 page. If you test online, practise your whiteboard method. Keep the GMAT dates 2027 page in mind when you pick your appointment. Let the GMAT exam syllabus guide your plan, and let your practice scores steer it.
Plan for 60 hours or more over at least six weeks. GMAC says most test takers prepare for 60 hours or more. Your starting level decides how much of the GMAT exam syllabus needs extra time.
Use GMAC's own practice exams first, starting with the free Starter Kit. GMAC says they use the same algorithm, scoring and timing as the real exam. It warns that not all other practice tests copy the official algorithm.
No. GMAC says the GMAT exam does not test vocabulary or grammar. Spend that time on passages and arguments.
