Any GMAT book you buy must cover the current GMAT Exam, not the retired 10th Edition. The current test has Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Data Insights. The best GMAT books start with the free GMAT Official Starter Kit. Next comes the GMAT Official Guide 2026-2027 from GMAC and Wiley. Unofficial titles come after these and are marked as unofficial.
GMAC retired the old 200-800 test on 31 January 2024. The current scale is 205 to 805. Read the GMAT syllabus 2027 page for the content map, and the GMAT exam pattern page for the 64-question structure.
Buy the Official Guide new, not second hand
2026-10-20The Official Guide includes an online question bank that opens through your mba.com account. The publisher warns that used copies often have expired or already redeemed serial codes.
GMAT Official Guide 2026-2027 (publisher page)This tab ranks GMAT books 2027 by source: official free, official paid, then unofficial. Use it to pick titles by section and by how you prepare.
The best GMAT books 2027 buyers can pick are the official ones. GMAC says its practice exams use the same algorithm, scoring and timing as the real exam. Prices below are from the GMAC store on 20 October 2026 and they move, so treat them as a guide.

| Tier | GMAT books and material | Approximate cost |
|---|---|---|
| Official, free | Starter Kit, sample questions, 6-week study planner | Free |
| Official, paid | Official Guide, three Review books, Practice Questions, Practice Exams 3 to 6 | About US115 per item; the Premium bundle is about US$300 |

Two GMAT books are a good start: the free Starter Kit and the Official Guide 2026-2027. Add a Review book for your weakest section and one paid practice exam for simulation. Our view is that if you buy only one paid item, it should be the Official Guide. It holds the most official questions and opens the online question bank.
The best GMAT books 2026-27 are the Official Guide 2026-2027 and its three Review books. GMAC published the guide in May 2026, so it matches the GMAT books 2027 intake. A 2027-2028 edition may follow later, but no details are confirmed. Buy the 2026-2027 edition now.
Choose GMAT books on three tests. They must cover the current edition. They should be official where possible. They must fit your weakest section. A title that fails the first test is the wrong book at any price.
Buy the GMAT Exam, formerly called the Focus Edition. It has 64 questions in three sections, with no essay and no Sentence Correction. GMAT Focus Edition books that still list Integrated Reasoning or Sentence Correction do not match the live test.
Second hand GMAT books are a risk for the Official Guide. Used copies often carry expired or already redeemed codes, so the online question bank may not open. Check the edition before you buy any used book.
For GMAT books free download, use only the official free material. That is the Starter Kit, the sample questions and the 6-week study planner. The Official Guide is a paid paperback or eBook. A GMAT books pdf of it from any other source is not an official free copy.
Your prep style decides which GMAT books you need, and no one needs all of them. Pick your tab and buy only what it lists.
Start with the free Starter Kit. Learn the structure and question types. Take Practice Exam 1 as a baseline, read the answer explanations, then take Practice Exam 2. Add the Official Guide 2026-2027 after that. If arithmetic and algebra are rusty, an unofficial title on math basics can fill the gap.
GMAT books for Quantitative Reasoning must train 21 Problem Solving questions on arithmetic and elementary algebra, with no calculator. Choose the official Review book first, then add practice questions.
| Book | Source | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Official Guide Quantitative Review 2026-2027 | Official, paid | Topic review and questions |
| Official Practice Questions: Quantitative | Official, paid | 100+ extra questions |
| GMAT All the Quant + DI | Unofficial | Quant and Data Insights practice |
| GMAT Advanced Quant | Unofficial | Harder Quant practice |
| GMAT Foundations of Math | Unofficial | Rebuilding math basics |
The Official Guide Math Review has four parts. They are value, order and factors; algebra, equalities and inequalities; and rates, ratios and percents. The fourth is statistics, sets, counting, probability, estimation and series. Start there. Buy an unofficial Quant title only if your score report still shows a gap.
GMAT books for Verbal Reasoning must cover 23 Reading Comprehension and Critical Reasoning questions with five options each. The current exam has no Sentence Correction, so skip any Verbal book that spends chapters on it. Look for GMAT books for critical reasoning that name the five question types below.
| Book | Source | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Official Guide Verbal Review 2026-2027 | Official, paid | Passages, inductive and deductive reasoning |
| Official Practice Questions: Verbal | Official, paid | 100+ extra questions |
| GMAT All the Verbal | Unofficial | Extra Verbal practice |
The best GMAT books for critical reasoning are the Official Guide and its Verbal Review. Both cover inductive and deductive reasoning. Critical Reasoning passages are usually fewer than 100 words. The question types are strengthen, weaken, flaw, support and plan evaluation. Use GMAT All the Verbal after the official sets if you want more volume. Whichever of the GMAT books for critical reasoning you pick, check that its passages are short.
GMAT books for Data Insights must cover 20 questions in five types. The types are Data Sufficiency, Multi-Source Reasoning, Table Analysis, Graphics Interpretation and Two-Part Analysis. This is the only section with an on-screen calculator.
| Book | Source | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Official Guide Data Insights Review 2026-2027 | Official, paid | Data sets, displays and patterns |
| Official Practice Questions: Data Insights | Official, paid | 100+ extra questions |
| GMAT All the Quant + DI | Unofficial | Extra Data Insights practice |
Some Data Insights questions have several parts. All parts must be correct to earn credit for that question. Practise this rule from the start, and answer every part of each question.
These GMAT books are listed in order of priority. Official titles come first. Unofficial titles are marked, and none of them is a GMAC product.
GMAT books from GMAC give you official questions, while coaching material gives you structure and teaching. For GMAT books 2027, that split is the main choice. Neither replaces a full official practice exam under test-day timing.
| What you need | GMAC books and exams | Coaching material |
|---|---|---|
| Official question style and scoring | Yes, GMAC states this | Not guaranteed |
| Step-by-step teaching of a topic | Review books and explanations | Depends on the course |
GMAC warns that not all unofficial practice tests replicate its algorithm. It also notes that candidates often score differently in practice than on the real exam because of anxiety and timing. So take a GMAC exam to check your level, even if you prepare in a class. See the GMAT exam fees page for the cost of the real test.
No GMAT previous year papers exist, because GMAC keeps real exam questions confidential. Official practice exams and the Official Guide replace them. The GMAT question papers page lists what is available.
GMAC's own route is simple. Learn the structure and the question types. Take Practice Exam 1 as a baseline and read the explanations. Then take Practice Exam 2 as a simulation. This sample six-week plan builds on that route.
| Weeks | Focus | Material |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Structure and baseline | Starter Kit, Practice Exam 1 |
| 2 to 3 | Weakest section | Official Guide, Review book |
| 4 to 5 | Mixed practice | Official Practice Questions |
| 6 | Simulation | Practice Exam 2 or a paid exam |
Practise without a calculator for Quantitative and Verbal. If you test online, practise on a whiteboard too. The real exam allows an on-screen calculator only in Data Insights.
Only as extra practice. The current exam has no Sentence Correction, and Data Insights replaced Integrated Reasoning. The score scale also changed from 200-800 to 205-805.
GMAC says most test takers prepare for 60 hours or more. It suggests at least six weeks, with steady sessions of 30 to 60 minutes.
No. Start with the free Starter Kit and add the Official Guide. The paid practice exams and the Premium Study Collection are optional.
