What are the Requirements to Study in France?

Applying as an international student in France depends on the course and level of study. In order to submit an application to one of the Grandes Écoles, you must make direct contact with the school. Application for a Licence degree is handled through the Parcoursup platform. If you wanted to pursue study at the master’s level, you will be required to make close communication with the educational institution, just like students in France do.

In general, you’ll have to prove that you have sufficient funds to cover your tuition, that you’re fluent in the language of instruction, and that you have health insurance (if you’re not an EU/EEA citizen).

Student Visa in France

Studying in France for between four months and a year requires a long-stay visa (VLS-TS). You can stay longer than six months with this visa, which functions like a resident permit. In addition, if you apply for a VLS-TS visa, you can take advantage of the following perks:

  • Valid in all 26 Schengen member states
  • The authorization to work a reduced schedule
  • Rent and family expenses are discounted

Meanwhile, the short-stay visa is designed for preparatory or language courses that are shorter than one academic year. This visa does not allow for an extension of stay or conversion to permanent residency status, and its maximum validity is three months.

Also, if you are not a national of an EU country, you will need a student visa to study in France.

It is not required to apply for a French student visa if you are a citizen of the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, or Liechtenstein.

How to Study in France from India?

Only with a valid student visa issued by the French government can Indian students enroll in French universities. Studying in France requires a VLS-TS or visa for long stays.

Indian students can apply for a student visa to study in France once they’ve been accepted to a school there. Students have to contact the French consulate in India to apply for a visa, and then present the needed documents, which may include a letter of acceptance from a French university, proof of financial means, a return ticket, and proof of accommodation in France.

Indian students should begin the application process as soon as possible after approval of the application from a French university, as it takes about 20–25 working days to obtain a visa.
