IIT Madras Admission Overview

IIT Madras admission depends on the course, and only the B.Tech, B.S. and Dual Degree routes use JEE Advanced. The table lists the entry route for each course. IIT Madras admission for the B.Tech has no separate application form. You apply through JoSAA, and the IIT Madras admission procedure for the other courses runs on separate portals.

IIT Madras admission dates for 2027 depend on the exams, and JEE Advanced 2027 has not been announced yet. The timeline lists the IIT Madras admission dates already published for the 2027 cycle. GATE 2027 is organised by IIT Madras, and JAM 2027 by IIT Kharagpur.

When Does the IIT Madras Admission Process Finish?

In 2026 the UG process finished with verification on 24 July and classes on 30 July. Hostel reporting is at the CCW office on or before your verification date. The institute does not change verification dates on request, and parents can view the orientation online.

When Will JoSAA 2027 Counselling Start?

The JoSAA 2027 dates are not announced. In 2026 Round 1 was on 13 June, a fortnight after the JEE Advanced result on 1 June.

When Do Online BS Applications Open for the January 2027 Term?

The study.iitm.ac.in page says applications open on 10 October 2026, but its banner also shows 29 September 2026 and 15 November 2026, which do not fit together. Confirm the dates on study.iitm.ac.in before you apply.

IIT Madras Eligibility Criteria 2027

IIT Madras admission eligibility for the B.Tech needs a place in the top 2,50,000 of JEE Main and a JEE Advanced rank. Each programme sets its own IIT Madras admission criteria, as the tabs show. These IIT Madras admission requirements apply to the cycle that follows. The JEE Advanced 2027 rules are not out yet, so the tab for B.Tech shows the 2026 rules.

  • Born on or after 1 October 2001 in the 2026 cycle, with five years of relaxation for SC, ST and PwD.
  • Two attempts at JEE Advanced, in two consecutive years.
  • Class XII appeared for the first time in 2025 or 2026, with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
  • No earlier admission to an IIT, with limited exceptions on the JEE Advanced site.
  • For JoSAA, 75% in Class XII (65% for SC, ST and PwD), or a place in the top 20 percentile of your board.

How Do I Apply for IIT Madras M.Tech Admission?

The IIT Madras admission procedure for the M.Tech starts on mtechadm.iitm.ac.in. You register with a COAP number, apply with a GATE score and choose programmes in order. Offers appear on COAP. In 2026 the first offers came in the second week of May, and extra rounds ran in July.

How Do I Apply for the IIT Madras MBA?

The IIT Madras admission process for the MBA starts on the DoMS portal after CAT results. MBA applications are online only, and hard copies are not processed. Keep your CAT scorecard, mark sheets, work experience letters and category certificate ready.

IIT Madras Selection Criteria 2027

IIT Madras admission selects B.Tech students by JEE Advanced rank, and no interview is part of it. JoSAA allots a seat by rank, category and choice order. M.Tech selection is by GATE score and your choices. The brochure also says a department may review IIT graduate applications.

The IIT Madras admission criteria for the MBA have two stages. DoMS shortlists with a composite score, in which CAT carries 75%, work experience 10%, Class XII and graduation marks 10% and gender and academic diversity 5%. Shortlisted candidates take an interview and a reflective writing test. The final MBA score is 50% composite score, 40% interview and 10% writing test.

IIT Madras Counselling and Seat Allocation 2027

IIT Madras admission seats are allotted through JoSAA counselling, which ran five rounds in 2026. Candidates who accept a seat in IIT Madras admission must pay the seat acceptance fee. Rs 5,000 of it is a JoSAA processing charge, and the rest is adjusted against the institute fee.

Can You Change Your Branch After JoSAA Allots One at IIT Madras?

Not through JoSAA, so IIT Madras admission is final for that branch at the counselling stage. You can improve the seat in later rounds if you choose float or slide. After the last round, JoSAA does not reopen choices. Ask the IIT Madras academic office about its own rules for a branch change after joining.

How Do Female-Only Seats Work at IIT Madras?

Women compete for female-only seats first and for gender-neutral seats only if they miss one. The female-only pool includes supernumerary seats. The cutoff page shows both pools.

Documents Required for IIT Madras Admission 2027

Bring original documents to IIT Madras verification, and no photocopies are needed. The UG schedule for 2026 lists these IIT Madras admission documents, which are part of the IIT Madras admission requirements. The IIT Madras admission 2027 list is not out yet.

  • Class 10 and Class 12 marksheets, and a birth certificate if the date of birth is missing.
  • A valid category certificate, if you claim a reserved seat.
  • A UDID certificate, and OCI proof, if they apply.
  • A passport and visa, for foreign nationals.
  • The JEE Advanced 2026 admit card, or the IAT 2026 score card for the B.S. in Medical Sciences and Engineering and the B.S. in Chemistry.
  • The JoSAA seat allotment slip, or the letters for the other channels.
  • An income certificate up to Rs 8 lakh, from the Tahsildar, only for a fee concession or scholarship.
  • A medical certificate in the format of Annexure I, and the welcome letter from the IITM JEE office.

IIT Madras Cutoff for Admission 2027

The IIT Madras cutoff for admission is the closing JEE Advanced rank of your programme and category. In 2026, CSE closed at rank 151 in the Open category. The cutoff page of this site gives every branch and category rank.

A Good Rank Alone Is Not Enough

IIT Madras admission also needs you to meet the Class XII rule, pay the seat acceptance fee on time and clear document verification. A missed deadline cancels the seat, and the institute does not extend verification dates for IIT Madras admission.

IIT Madras Reservation Criteria 2027

IIT Madras admission follows the central reservation rules, with 10% seats for GEN-EWS, 27% for OBC-NCL, 15% for SC and 7.5% for ST. The JEE Advanced page also lists a 5% horizontal reservation for PwD candidates inside each category.

JoSAA lists Open, GEN-EWS, OBC-NCL, SC and ST, with a PwD version of each. OBC-NCL and EWS certificates must be in the central format and issued on or after 1 April 2026, or be online verifiable. Women get supernumerary seats on top of the gender-neutral seats.

IIT Madras Direct Admission 2027

IIT Madras has no direct admission or management quota, and the schedule lists only the official admission channels. The IIT Madras admission channels are JoSAA, Sports Excellence Admission (SEA), Fine Arts and Cultural Excellence (FACE), SCOPE and the IAT route for two B.S. courses. IIT Madras began SEA in 2024 and admitted students through FACE from 2025.

Can You Get Into IIT Madras Without JEE Advanced?

Yes, IIT Madras admission has some routes without it.

  • The B.S. in Mathematics also takes the Math Olympiad route through JoSAA.
  • The online BS needs no JEE rank at all. You pass the qualifier exam, or you may enter through JEE Advanced eligibility.
  • M.Tech needs GATE and M.Sc. needs JAM.
