IIT Delhi holds NIRF 2025 rank 2 in Engineering, and QS World University Rankings 2027 rank 118. Those two decide most of what a family wants to know.
The QS number is the one that moved. IIT Delhi climbed from 197 in the 2024 edition to 150 in 2025. Then 123 in 2026, and 118 in 2027. That 118 equals the highest global position any Indian institution has ever held in the list. IIT Delhi's own release uses the word equalled.
Domestically the picture reads differently. NIRF 2025 places IIT Delhi 4th Overall, behind IIT Madras, IISc Bangalore and IIT Bombay. Both numbers are true. They measure different things, and a family comparing colleges needs to know which one it is reading.
Indian Institute of Technology Delhi holds four separate NIRF 2025 category ranks. Engineering (2), Research (3), Overall (4) and Management (4). It also holds the top QS World Ranking position among Indian institutes, in the 2027 edition published June 2026.

IIT Delhi is the highest-ranked technical institute in NIRF's Management category. It sits fourth, behind IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore and IIM Kozhikode, and ahead of IIM Lucknow. A technical institute's own management department outscoring a dedicated business school is an unusual result. Its Engineering rank alone does not show that.
IIT Delhi has climbed the QS World University Rankings in every edition since 2024. It moved from rank 197 in the 2024 edition, to 150 in 2025, to 123 in 2026. The 2027 edition, published June 2026, put it at 118. IIT Delhi describes that as a rise of 79 positions over four years.
IIT Delhi's own release says 118 equals the highest global position an Indian institution has reached in this list. It remains India's No. 1-ranked institute in the QS table.
Five subjects sit inside the QS Subject Rankings 2026 global top 50, published in March 2026. Electrical Engineering holds 36, Mechanical Engineering 44, Computer Science 45, Chemical Engineering 48, and Civil Engineering 50. The broader Engineering and Technology category holds global rank 36, again India's best.

Here are the QS indicators IIT Delhi actually published for the 2027 edition. Anything QS has not published for IIT Delhi stays off this page.
IIT Delhi ranks 39th globally on this indicator, an improvement of 11 places. QS builds it by asking recruiters directly which institutes they rate highest, and it lines up with IIT Delhi's own placement office reporting rising offer volumes each season.
IIT Delhi improved 60 positions on this indicator. QS does not publish a standalone global rank for it in the institute's release, so it states the movement and not a position.
IIT Delhi improved 26 positions here. The indicator counts how often other researchers cite its published work, which measures research impact rather than teaching quality. Again the release states the movement, not a position.
QS places IIT Delhi at 205 on its Sustainability Ranking, which covers environmental and social impact. This one comes from QS's own profile rather than the institute's release, and it is the weakest of the four.

NIRF does not rank individual B.Tech branches. It ranks Engineering as one whole-institute category, where IIT Delhi holds rank 2 for 2025. Branch-level detail comes from QS Subject Rankings instead, which do break down by subject.
Electrical Engineering holds global rank 36, Mechanical Engineering 44, Computer Science 45, Chemical Engineering 48, and Civil Engineering 50. All five sit inside the world's top 50 for 2026. Any branch-specific NIRF rank you see quoted elsewhere is not something NIRF publishes.

NIRF scores every institute on the same scale, so you can put the IITs side by side directly.
| Institute | NIRF 2025 Overall Rank | Overall Score | NIRF 2025 Engineering Rank | Engineering Score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IIT Madras | 1 | 87.31 | 1 | 88.72 |
| IISc Bangalore | 2 | 85.00 | - | - |
| IIT Bombay | 3 | 81.62 | 3 | 83.65 |
| IIT Delhi | 4 | 80.67 | 2 | 85.74 |
| IIT Kanpur | 5 | 77.25 | 4 | 81.82 |
| IIT Kharagpur | 6 | 73.99 | 5 | 78.69 |

Read Indian Institute of Technology Delhi's own row and the two columns disagree. IIT Delhi beats IIT Bombay on Engineering, 85.74 against 83.65. It trails Bombay Overall, 80.67 against 81.62. A single Overall number hides that reversal. If Engineering is the programme you are comparing, the Overall column is the wrong column to read.
There is one more thing to check before you choose on rank alone. Ask each institute about the branch you actually want. A two-point gap in an Overall score decides far less than the branch does.
