IIT Delhi sits at Hauz Khas, New Delhi, Delhi 110016, in South Delhi. The Delhi Metro reaches it directly. That is the one fact to hold onto before anything else here: whatever else changes about your plan, the metro almost certainly still works.
| Quick Facts | Detail |
|---|---|
| Nearest airport | Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI), 10.3-11.0 km, 30-36 min by road, or 26 min by Magenta Line metro from Terminal 1 |
| Nearest railway station | Safdarjung, 6.2-8.2 km, 26-30 min |
| Nearest metro station | IIT (Magenta Line), 1.4 km, 5-6 min |
| Also very close | Hauz Khas metro (Yellow/Magenta interchange), 1.2 km, 4-5 min |
| Campus phone | 011 2659 7135 |
Who this suits: a family planning a first visit, a joining day, or a campus interview, who wants one clear route worked out in advance rather than five options to choose between on the day.
Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) is Delhi's only airport. A live Maps check from the airport to IIT Delhi's main road returned two road options, 10.3 km (30 min) and 11.0 km (36 min), both via Rao Tularam Marg.
There is a second way in, and for many travellers it is the better one: the Delhi Metro's Magenta Line runs directly from Terminal 1-IGI Airport to the IIT metro station, no change of line required. The same Maps check showed a 1:45 pm departure taking 26 minutes for a Rs 32 fare, with trains roughly every 7 minutes. Work out what that means for you: a 30-36 minute cab ride against a fixed, traffic-proof 26-minute metro ride for Rs 32. If your luggage is light and your terminal is Terminal 1, the metro is usually the calmer choice.
Who this suits: flying in from outside Delhi, the metro option from Terminal 1 removes the one variable that usually causes the most worry on a first visit, which is Delhi traffic.
Three stations get mentioned for IIT Delhi. Only one of them is genuinely close. A live Maps check settles which:
| Station | Distance | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Safdarjung | 6.2-8.2 km | 26-30 min |
| Hazrat Nizamuddin | 10.5-12.2 km | 37-41 min |
| New Delhi | 13.1-13.5 km | 43-48 min (or 39 min by metro) |
Safdarjung is the nearest by a clear margin, roughly 4 to 7 km closer than the other two. That is the station to plan around if your train serves it.
If your ticket says New Delhi or Hazrat Nizamuddin instead, do not assume a long taxi ride is your only option. New Delhi station connects to the Yellow Line, which changes to the Magenta Line, arriving at IIT in about 39 minutes for a Rs 43 fare, the same Maps check confirmed. That is often faster than the road distance would suggest, because it skips Delhi's surface traffic entirely.
Who this suits: if you can choose which station to book to, choose Safdarjung. If you cannot, the metro connection from New Delhi station is a genuine second-best, not just a fallback.
IIT Delhi's Main Gate sits directly on IIT Delhi Main Road, off Gamal Abdel Nasser Marg (the same road the Outer Ring Road runs into at this point). If you are driving from elsewhere in Delhi, this is the road name to give a driver who does not already know the campus, alongside "Hauz Khas" and "IIT Gate."
Who this suits: driving in from within Delhi-NCR, or arriving by an intercity bus into one of Delhi's ISBTs (Kashmere Gate, Anand Vihar or Sarai Kale Khan), where you would then switch to the metro or a cab for the final leg.
Once you are anywhere in Delhi, the metro is the dependable way in. Two stations sit close enough to matter:
IIT metro station (Magenta Line): 1.4 km, 5-6 min by road from the gate, or a 20-25 minute walk if you would rather not book a short cab. Opened in 2018, it sits between R.K. Puram and Hauz Khas stations.
Hauz Khas metro station (Yellow Line and Magenta Line interchange): 1.2 km, 4-5 min by road, marginally closer than the IIT station and useful if your journey starts on the Yellow Line.
Both are close enough that you could reasonably treat either as "the IIT Delhi station" depending on which line you are already on.
Bus routes: the same Maps check that measured the Hauz Khas distance also showed DTC routes 774, 448, 764 and 764B running directly along IIT Delhi Main Road, confirmed live rather than guessed. These are the routes to look for at a DTC stop if you are travelling by bus rather than metro.
Who this suits: anyone already in Delhi on the day, the metro plus a short walk or auto is usually simpler to plan around than a bus route, though the confirmed numbers above are there if you need them.

A note worth having before you go: IIT Delhi does not publish its own distance figures for the airport or the railway stations on its official site. Every kilometre and minute figure here comes from a live Maps check run for It, not from the institute. Treat it as a planning number and check a live map on the day itself, since traffic conditions change.
Answers to what readers ask most often.
Yes. The IIT station on the Magenta Line sits 1.4 km, about 5-6 minutes by road, from the Main Gate. It opened in 2018 and connects directly to Terminal 1 of IGI Airport without changing lines.
They are nearly tied. Hauz Khas checked at 1.2 km, IIT station at 1.4 km. Hauz Khas is also an interchange between the Yellow and Magenta lines, so pick whichever line you are already travelling on.
Safdarjung, if you have a choice. It checked at 6.2-8.2 km from campus, 4 to 7 km closer than Hazrat Nizamuddin or New Delhi station, the two next-nearest options.
Not really. New Delhi station connects by metro, Yellow Line to Magenta Line, reaching IIT in about 39 minutes for a Rs 43 fare. That is often quicker than it looks on a map, because it avoids Delhi's surface traffic.
