MBA vs PGDM: Which Is Better for Higher Studies and Jobs
Content Manager
MBA and PGDM are popular choices for students looking to build a career in management. While both offer opportunities in higher studies and jobs, they differ in curriculum, recognition, fees, and career prospects. Explore the key differences between MBA and PGDM to understand which qualification best suits your academic goals and career plans.

MBA vs PGDM comes down to one legal point. An MBA is a university degree, and the University Grants Commission (UGC) governs it. A PGDM is a diploma from an autonomous institute, and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) approves it. That is the whole legal difference between PGDM and MBA degree. It has very little effect on your pay.
XLRI Jamshedpur gives you a PGDM. The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) now give you a full MBA degree. This change started only in 2019. Both routes can lead to a salary that most university MBA programmes do not offer. So do not choose between MBA vs PGDM by the label alone. Ask three things instead: which institute, which entrance exam, and which career each one opens.
This MBA vs PGDM guide answers all three. It explains the difference between PGDM and MBA degree using the current AICTE and UGC rules, not the old version many blogs still repeat.
UGC
Regulates MBA as a university degree
UGC Act, 1956
AICTE
Approves PGDM as a diploma course
At autonomous, non-university institutes
2019
Year IIMs began awarding MBA degrees
Under the IIM Act, 2017
What Is PGDM and MBA? The Difference Between PGDM and MBA Degree
An MBA degree comes from a university, and UGC regulates it. A PGDM comes from an autonomous institute that is not a university. Such an institute cannot legally award a degree, so it awards a diploma. AICTE approves that diploma course.
The difference between PGDM and MBA degree is not about quality. It is a rule about who can legally give a "degree" in India. Only a university can do this. It must be set up under a state or central Act, or declared a deemed university. This power comes from the UGC Act, 1956.
An autonomous institute like XLRI Jamshedpur or MDI Gurgaon is a registered society, not a university. So AICTE approves its two-year, full-time course as a Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM). It does not call that course an MBA.
Table: MBA vs PGDM at a glance
| Parameter | MBA (university degree) | PGDM (autonomous institute diploma) |
|---|---|---|
| Awarding body | A university or deemed university | An autonomous, non-university institute |
| Regulator | UGC | AICTE (course approval), NBA (programme accreditation) |
| Legal status | Degree | Diploma |
| Curriculum flexibility | Partly fixed by the university's syllabus rules | Often updated every year by the institute itself |
| Example institutes | IIMs (since 2019), most state and central university B-schools | XLRI Jamshedpur, MDI Gurgaon, SPJIMR, most standalone B-schools |
The IIMs do not fit this simple MBA vs PGDM split, and most articles get this wrong. Parliament passed the IIM Act, 2017. It gave every IIM the legal power to award degrees for the first time.
IIM Ahmedabad used this power at its 54th convocation in March 2019. It gave its Post Graduate Programme (PGP) graduates a full Master of Business Administration degree. Until then, the institute gave a PGDM diploma, as per IIM Ahmedabad's own announcement. An IIM graduate today holds a real MBA degree, not a diploma. The programme is still called "PGP" on campus.
This 2017 change is why a search for "MBA vs PGDM" shows mixed answers. Before 2019, even an IIM Ahmedabad graduate held a diploma equal to a PGDM. Today, the IIM route gives you a degree. The XLRI or MDI route still gives you a diploma. Does the MBA vs PGDM difference cost you anything when you apply for a job or a government post? Most guides skip this part.
MBA vs PGDM for Government Jobs or Higher Studies: Does a PGDM Cost You Anything?
A PGDM does not block a government job or further study. But it is not accepted automatically either. The Association of Indian Universities (AIU) gives MBA-equivalence to a PGDM one institute at a time. This equivalence is meant for higher education, as per AIU's own equivalence guidelines.
This one fact gives the whole practical answer on MBA vs PGDM for government jobs. AIU does not say "PGDM equals MBA" for all institutes. Each AICTE-approved, NBA-accredited institute applies on its own and pays AIU's processing fee.
So check if your institute's PGDM is on AIU's published equivalence list. Do not assume every PGDM is valid everywhere.
A government job notice often asks for "a recognised MBA or equivalent." An AIU equivalence certificate from a well-known, accredited institute usually meets this need. A PGDM with no NBA accreditation and no AIU equivalence is risky here. So on PGDM or MBA, which is better for a government job, the institute's accreditation record matters more than the word on your certificate.
The institute's name also decides what you pay and what you earn after. That is the real answer inside "PGDM or MBA, which is better." In MBA vs PGDM, the pay matters more than the paperwork.
MBA vs PGDM: Which One Pays More After Graduation?
On pay, which is best, PGDM or MBA? Neither label sets your salary. The institute's placement record does. Two institutes tracked by MSM Unify show that "MBA pays more" is not true.
XLRI Jamshedpur's PGDM in Business Management and PGDM in Human Resource Management are diplomas under AICTE. Its 2024-26 batch got a median salary of Rs 29 lakh. XLRI's own placement overview reports 576 students placed across 145 recruiters.
IIM Ahmedabad's PGP has been a full MBA degree since 2019. Its Class of 2026 placed 100% of students at a median cash component of Rs 32.5 lakh. B2K Analytics audited this figure for IIM Ahmedabad. The gap is real. But it comes from how selective the institute is and how many recruiters visit it. In MBA vs PGDM terms, it has nothing to do with "diploma" or "degree."
Rs 29 lakh
XLRI Jamshedpur median salary
PGDM (BM/HRM), 2024-26 batch
Rs 32.5 lakh
IIM Ahmedabad median salary
PGP/MBA, Class of 2026
Rs 29.0 lakh
MDI Gurgaon median salary
PGDM, 2024-26 batch
The third figure matters as much as the first two. MDI Gurgaon's PGDM is also a diploma. Its median was almost the same as XLRI's for the same batch years. A recruiter hiring from these three campuses pays for the institute's name and its recruiter network. In MBA vs PGDM, nobody checks at the offer-letter stage whether the certificate says "MBA" or "PGDM."
Check each institute's own fee and placement pages before you compare MBA vs PGDM options. These figures change every admission cycle.
At this level, pay is about the same in MBA vs PGDM. The real difference is which colleges give which credential, and how you get into each one.
MBA vs PGDM Colleges: Which Top Colleges Give an MBA, and Which Give a PGDM?
The IIMs give an MBA degree today. XLRI and MDI Gurgaon give a PGDM diploma, and so do most other standalone business schools. Both groups are among India's most selective management institutes. In MBA vs PGDM, "diploma" here does not mean "lesser."
Table: MBA vs PGDM institutes, and what they award
| Institute | Credential | Governing framework |
|---|---|---|
| Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) | MBA degree (since 2019) | IIM Act, 2017 |
| XLRI Jamshedpur | PGDM | AICTE-approved autonomous institute |
| MDI Gurgaon | PGDM | AICTE-approved autonomous institute |
| IIFT Delhi | MBA (IB) / MBA (BA) | Deemed-to-be university |
IIFT Delhi is a special case in the MBA vs PGDM comparison. IIFT is a deemed-to-be university. So its programme is an MBA (International Business) or MBA (Business Analytics), not a PGDM. In most other ways, it works like the standalone institutes on this list.
IIFT no longer holds its own entrance test. It now admits full-time students only on the CAT score, followed by a Group Discussion and a Personal Interview.
Want the PGDM route through one of India's oldest and most selective business schools? XLRI Jamshedpur offers a PGDM in Business Management, a PGDM in Human Resource Management, and a Rutgers double-masters PGDM (LSCM).
Want a second PGDM option with a strong name in finance and analytics? MDI Gurgaon offers ten current programmes.
Want the MBA-degree route through an IIM instead? The IIM Ahmedabad admission process page explains its Composite Score system. It shows how much weight your CAT percentile carries against the rest of your profile.
Every route on this MBA vs PGDM list needs an entrance exam score. The exam you need depends on the institutes you aim for.
MBA vs PGDM Entrance Exam: CAT or XAT, Which Do You Actually Need?
If your list has any IIM, IIFT Delhi, or other PGDM institutes that accept CAT, you need the Common Admission Test (CAT). If XLRI Jamshedpur is on your list, you need the Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT), which XLRI itself conducts.
CAT is the biggest entrance exam for management admissions in India. It is used for every IIM's MBA programme and for IIFT Delhi's MBA (IB) and MBA (BA) programmes. Most PGDM institutes outside the XLRI group accept it too, including MDI Gurgaon. The CAT 2026 overview page covers the exam pattern, the registration dates, and the institutes that accept CAT this year.
XAT is the one exam that CAT cannot replace if XLRI Jamshedpur is on your list. XLRI admits students to its four PGDM programmes only on XAT scores. Many other PGDM and MBA institutes also accept XAT as a second option.
Picking the right exam narrows your MBA vs PGDM list fast. A CAT score alone does not get you into XLRI. An XAT score alone does not get you into an IIM.
For MBA vs PGDM, decide your target institutes first. Then prepare for the exam they accept. This is the last step in "PGDM or MBA, which is better," and it depends on your goal, not on a general ranking.
Which Is Best, PGDM or MBA? How to Choose
PGDM or MBA, which is better, depends on your career goal and your list of institutes, not the word on the certificate. Here is how it works in four common situations.
If you want a government job, or a role that asks for "MBA": a university MBA removes any doubt. So does an IIM's MBA, since 2019. A PGDM with an AIU equivalence certificate works too. But you have one extra step: check that your institute has this certificate.
If you ask which is best, PGDM or MBA, for private-sector placement: compare institutes by their own placement data, not by MBA vs PGDM. A PGDM from MDI Gurgaon or XLRI Jamshedpur, with a Rs 29 lakh median, is stronger than an MBA from a low-ranked university on every point a recruiter checks.
If you are still deciding between exams: pick your target institutes first. CAT is accepted by the IIMs, IIFT Delhi, and most other PGDM institutes. XAT is the exam for XLRI Jamshedpur.
If you plan to study abroad or do a PhD later: a university MBA, or an IIM's MBA degree after 2019, needs no extra equivalence step outside India. A PGDM may need a separate check by a foreign university, even if it has AIU equivalence for use in India. Find this out early.
None of these four answers says which is best, PGDM or MBA, for everyone. Each one matches the credential to what you want to do next.
MBA vs PGDM: Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between PGDM and MBA degree?
An MBA is a university degree regulated by UGC, while a PGDM is a diploma from an AICTE-approved autonomous institute. A university can legally award a degree under the UGC Act, 1956. An autonomous institute like XLRI Jamshedpur is a registered society, not a university, so it awards a diploma. The IIMs are the exception. Under the IIM Act, 2017, they have awarded a full MBA degree since March 2019. Data Sources: IIM Ahmedabad official announcement, AICTE approval framework.
PGDM or MBA, which is better for a government job?
In MBA vs PGDM for a government job, neither is better by default. What matters is whether your PGDM has an AIU equivalence certificate. The Association of Indian Universities gives MBA-equivalence to a PGDM one institute at a time, not to all PGDM courses together. A university MBA, or an IIM MBA after 2019, needs no such extra check. Data Sources: Association of Indian Universities, Equivalence of Degree guidelines.
What is PGDM and MBA, in one line each?
An MBA is a two-year university degree in management. A PGDM is a two-year diploma in management from an autonomous institute that is not a university. Both usually have the same core subjects, case-study teaching and summer internship. The difference between PGDM and MBA degree is about who may legally award the qualification, not about what is taught in class. Data Sources: UGC Act, 1956; AICTE approval process.
Which is best, PGDM or MBA, for private-sector placements?
In MBA vs PGDM for private-sector placements, the institute's placement record decides this, not the label on the certificate. XLRI Jamshedpur's PGDM placed its 2024-26 batch at a Rs 29 lakh median salary. This is close to IIM Ahmedabad's Rs 32.5 lakh MBA median for the Class of 2026. Compare individual institutes on their own placement reports, not the two groups in general. Data Sources: XLRI Jamshedpur placement overview; IIM Ahmedabad PGP placement audit report, 2026.
