What is a day in the life of a student doing executive MBA from IIM really like? Alumni describe long days, heavy deadlines and very little sleep, along with a close group of classmates that they say they value. The IIMs publish no hourly timetable and no alumni survey. So this guide uses three kinds of material about an executive MBA from IIM: official programme data, one named alumnus quote from the IIM Bangalore website, and posts by alumni and students on public forums and blogs, mostly from 2025 and 2026. These posts are real experience, but the IIMs have not verified them, so each such point is marked as alumni-reported.

What Is a Day Really Like for a Student Doing Executive MBA from IIM?
A day in the life of a student doing executive MBA from IIM on a one year residential programme runs from early morning to well after midnight. You attend classes, then work with your study group, then finish submissions for the next day. Alumni say the day feels full from the first hour, and the pace does not ease during most terms.
How to read the tags on this page
Official means the point comes from the IIM's own pages. Alumni-reported means students describe it and the IIM does not publish it. Our sums means we worked it out from official figures. Timings differ by IIM and by term.
Early Morning
The day starts
Alumni-reported: one student of a one year IIM programme describes a start at about 7 am and a quick breakfast.
About 10 AM to 6 PM
Classes and case discussions
The class window is from one student account of an IIM Calcutta one year programme, and IIM Ahmedabad students describe up to three case studies a day. One IIM Bangalore EPGP alumnus, who finished in March 2026, says classes run five to six days a week, with one day kept for projects and assignments. Official: IIM Ahmedabad says case discussions are supported by lectures, seminars, games, role plays, industrial visits and group exercises.
After Lunch
The hardest class hours
Alumni-reported: students say tiredness is highest in the sessions after lunch, and surprise quizzes can come at any time.
Evening
Study group and submissions
Alumni-reported: the group divides the cases and assignments and finishes the day's submissions.
Around Midnight
Tea and talk in the hostel
Alumni-reported: students describe late-night tea with hostel mates as the time when friendships form.
About 2 AM
Sleep
Alumni-reported: one account ends the day at about 2 am, and another student writes of being short of sleep and energy in the summer term.
The IIMs do not state these timings, so treat them as a picture of the pattern and not as a schedule. The next question is how much of this day is class time and how much is your own work.
How Many Hours of Class Does a Student Sit Through?
Class hours are not published day by day. If the PGPX figure of 700 hours is spread over 40 to 48 weeks, classes average about 15 to 17 hours a week (our sums). That is about 3 to 4 hours a day over a five-day week. Some days will be heavier, and some will be free for group work. So the executive MBA daily routine on campus has fewer class hours than many students expect, and more group hours.
What Do Study Groups Do in an IIM Executive MBA?
A study group is a small team that shares the reading and the assignments. The PGPX FAQ document says the batch is divided into 15 small groups of 5 to 6 students, which it calls syndicate groups. Alumni-reported: one student describes a group of working professionals from very different fields. The group had early friction because members found it hard to listen to each other. By the second term, the group set timelines, divided the work and stopped long circular debates. In the life of an executive MBA student, the study group is the team you work with on most assignments.
Do Students Get Any Break in a One Year Programme?
Very few. The IIM Calcutta MBAEx FAQ says there is usually one week's break during the entire course. The IIM Bangalore EPGP calendar has a gap between terms for exam weeks and a set of workshop courses from 30 November to 12 December 2026. Alumni-reported: one student says there were no free weekends or holidays during the year. Plan your family time before you join.
What Do Alumni Say Is Good About the Day?
The alumni accounts we found for an executive MBA from IIM praise four things: the classmates, the study group, the campus and the pressure itself.
- The classmates. IIM Calcutta lists the "rich domain knowledge of students" with diverse experience in reputed organisations as a feature of its MBAEx. Alumni-reported: study groups bring together people such as a chartered accountant, a software engineer and a marketing manager, and members learn each other's fields. A PGPX alumnus calls the work intense, sometimes brutal, sometimes fun and never still, and says the best part is the people, who are classmates to learn from and not rivals.
- The study group. Alumni-reported: after the early friction, students call the group a source of support. They study together before exams, share small wins and ask each other for help late at night.
- The pressure. Abhishek Khandelwal, an EPGP alumnus and Chief Financial Officer of Snow Leopard Ventures, told the 2025-26 IIM Bangalore batch that the rigours "would prepare you for the real world in a way that you cannot even imagine today." This is one named alumnus on the IIM's own website. It is not a survey of all alumni. Another EPGP alumnus, on a public forum, says the programme is worth doing if you can take the intensity.
- The campus. Alumni-reported: IIM executive MBA campus life includes midnight tea, birthday celebrations and placement-season excitement. A PGPX alumnus describes good rooms, a library, sports facilities and food delivered to the room during exams. An EPGP alumnus says you may stay outside the campus for family reasons, but advises staying in the hostel because being on campus is the real experience.
The good side is real, but it comes with a cost. The next question is what alumni say about that cost.
What Do Alumni Say Is Hard About the Day?
Alumni of an executive MBA from IIM also give plain warnings. The same alumnus who praised the rigour gave one too. He told the batch that the programme "packs two years' content into 11 months, so there will be impossible deadlines prompting you to question your academic choice." Student accounts of an executive MBA from IIM say the same thing in simpler words.
- Deadlines every day. Alumni-reported: students describe daily submissions, case studies and surprise quizzes, with professors who keep giving assignments.
- Sleep and health. Alumni-reported: a PGPX alumnus warns that physical health takes a back seat and that the year takes a toll on the body. One student writes that there was little time for exercise and worried about weight gain. Another describes being short of sleep and energy in the summer term. The IIMs publish nothing on sleep or health.
- The first six months. Alumni-reported: one PGPX alumnus says the programme is very demanding at least in the first six months of an executive MBA from IIM, so anyone who plans to run a business alongside it should expect divided attention.
- Distance from family. Alumni-reported: students write of postponing calls to their mothers and of leaving their families behind. Official: IIM Calcutta provides furnished campus accommodation for its MBAEx and does not permit residing outside.
- Friction in the first term. Alumni-reported: one student says a group of strong, senior people found it hard to listen to each other at first.
- Treatment differs by IIM. Alumni-reported: One PGPX alumnus says the one year class at IIM Ahmedabad gets strong facilities, faculty and electives. Other forum posters say one year students at some other IIMs feel less joined to the two year batch. These views are not verified, so ask alumni of the exact programme.
- Money and income. On the residential route of an executive MBA from IIM, you pay the fee and give up a year of salary. The full cost is in our cost and ROI guide.
Each of these points is easier to handle if you know it before you join. The next question is how far the alumni view matches what the IIMs publish.
Where Do Alumni Accounts and Official Data Agree?
Alumni accounts of an executive MBA from IIM agree with official data on the pace and the fixed structure. They do not cover sleep, family time or daily hours, because the IIMs do not publish those.
| Topic | What alumni say | What the IIM publishes |
|---|---|---|
| Pace | Two years of content in 11 months | Term dates and exam weeks, no daily timetable |
| Class hours | About 10 am to 6 pm in one account | Above 700 classroom hours a year (older FAQ) |
| Study group | Friction first, then clear roles | 15 groups of 5 to 6 students, each with a room |
| Break | No free weekends in one account | Usually one week's break at IIM Calcutta |
| Sleep and health | Late nights, short sleep, health takes a back seat (one PGPX alumnus) | Not published |
What Does the Day Look Like for a Working Student on the Blended Route?
Alumni posts about the blended executive MBA from IIM are fewer than for the one year route, and most come from one cohort, so treat them as early signals. The official rules come first, and then what alumni say. The IIM executive MBA class timings on the blended route are set for working people. The IIM Ahmedabad BPGP lists the live online slots. Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings each have two sessions between 6.30 pm and 9.30 pm. Sunday has a morning session from 10.20 am to 1.10 pm, plus one more pre-lunch session. Attendance is mandatory. If you miss a class with approved leave, you can watch the recording for up to seven days.
Day: You work as usual. You finish by early evening and log in before 6.30 pm.
Class: Two live sessions run until 9.30 pm. These are the main IIM executive MBA class timings. You take part in the case discussion on screen.
After class: You eat and read the case for Friday. Friday and Saturday follow the same 6.30 pm to 9.30 pm pattern, so three weekday evenings are fully booked.
How Many Hours a Week Does the Blended Route Need?
Live classes alone come to about 12 hours in a full week. Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings add up to 9 hours, and the Sunday session from 10.20 am to 1.10 pm adds almost 3 more. The extra pre-lunch session on Sunday has no stated time, so the total can be a little higher. Check these IIM executive MBA class timings against your office hours before you apply. Reading and assignments come on top of that. The official figure is 900 hours of classroom sessions and project work across two years and 36 credits. The PGPX figure counts study time separately, so do not compare the two numbers directly.
What Do Blended-Route Alumni Say About the Day?
Alumni-reported: a member of the first cohort of the blended executive MBA from IIM at IIM Ahmedabad (BPGP) calls the cohort sharp and experienced. The member says online sessions have close to class-level participation, with professors joining live from the IIM studio. The member also says attendance is compulsory, and leave needs approval with proof of a work, medical or personal reason. This matches the official rule.
The hard parts are about time and placements.
- Weekends go. Alumni-reported: a student of the two year blended executive MBA from IIM Kozhikode (EPGP), which is a different programme at another IIM, says to be ready to give up weekends for two years. The student lists late-night meetings with fellow students, many assignments, weekday classes from 7 pm to 10 pm in the second year, and real fatigue in that second year. The student also says some classmates lose focus in online classes.
- No campus placements. Alumni-reported: the member of the first BPGP cohort says there are no conventional placement rounds, because almost all students already have jobs. The gain, the member says, is the network, which meets at city events shared with the PGP and PGPX batches.
These are early signals from a few people. Ask two or three alumni of the exact blended executive MBA from IIM about their week.
How Many Hours a Week Does a Student Doing Executive MBA from IIM Put In?
An executive MBA from IIM on the residential route needs roughly 45 to 55 hours of work a week. The IIM Ahmedabad PGPX FAQ document says the year has above 700 hours of classroom work and another 1,500 hours of self and group study. That is more than 2,200 hours. Spread over a full 48-week year, it is about 46 hours a week. Spread over only the 40 or so teaching weeks, as in IIM Bangalore's 2026-27 EPGP calendar, it is about 55 hours a week. These are our own averages, not official weekly figures. The FAQ document was last updated in June 2016, so ask the programme office if the hours are the same for your batch.
The IIM executive MBA workload is a full-time job plus overtime. Classes make up about 15 to 17 hours of it. The rest is reading cases, group work and assignments. If you are weighing an executive MBA from IIM, test this number against your own week. The next question is how the year is divided into terms, because the load changes from term to term.
How Does the Year Look Term by Term?
An executive MBA from IIM is built around terms, with exam weeks at the end of each. IIM Bangalore's EPGP 2026-27 calendar is a clear example. It has five terms, an international immersion and a workshop period.
30 Mar – 1 Jun 2026
Term I
Six core courses. Mid-term exams 2–4 May and end-term exams 4–6 June.
8 Jun – 7 Aug 2026
Term II
Seven core courses. Mid-term exams 11–13 July and end-term exams 10–12 August.
17 – 29 Aug 2026
Term III
International immersion.
31 Aug – 21 Nov 2026
Term IV
Mid-term exams 5–10 October and end-term exams 23–28 November.
30 Nov – 12 Dec 2026
Workshop courses
A dedicated period between terms.
14 Dec 2026 – 27 Feb 2027
Term V
End-term exams 1–6 March 2027.
Exam weeks fall at the end of each term, so the executive MBA daily routine changes from term to term. In early October 2026, the current EPGP batch is in Term IV, and its mid-term exams start on 5 October. The IIM Calcutta MBAEx has six terms, and students take 15 electives in terms 4, 5 and 6. The IIM Ahmedabad PGPX page lists six terms, from the building-block terms to electives and a capstone.
In an executive MBA from IIM, you study the core subjects of a full MBA, taught in the case method. In EPGP Term I, the six core courses are Financial Reporting and Analysis, Competition and Strategy, Designing Organizations, Decision Sciences, Managerial Economics and Entrepreneurial Management. Term II adds seven more, including Marketing Management, Operations Management and Corporate Finance. So a typical day might mix an accounting class in the morning with a strategy case in the afternoon. That is the life of an executive MBA student in the first two terms.
What Changes for Someone With 8 Years of Experience?
The biggest change in an executive MBA from IIM is that you become a student again, with senior-level habits. Your classmates are peers. The PGPX 2025-26 class had 7–8 years of average experience and an average age of 31. The EPGP 2026-27 class had 6.8 years and an average age of 29. At 8 years, you sit at or just above the average.
These points matter in daily life.
- Handover first. A residential executive MBA from IIM starts only after you leave your job. Finish your notice period and handover before term begins.
- Family planning. The older PGPX FAQ document says housing is available for single and married students, which shapes IIM executive MBA campus life for families. Plan housing, schooling and family support before you apply.
- Group work is the real test. In the life of an executive MBA student, you work with people from other sectors. Alumni-reported: listening and sharing the load matter more than seniority.
- Weekends are not free. The IIM executive MBA workload of projects, assignments and exam preparation fills them.
Was the Effort Worth It?
Alumni views of an executive MBA from IIM are split, and they depend on the route and on what you earn now. The posts below are alumni-reported and not verified by the IIMs.
- One year residential route. A PGPX alumnus says most placements are mid-management roles linked to the earlier field, and that some students move into consulting. A complete change of field is less common. Several posts say the return is clearest when your current pay is lower. One alumnus says a few high earners took a pay cut to switch sectors. Others say the network and the path to senior roles matter more than the first salary.
- Blended route. On the blended executive MBA from IIM, posts say the value is the degree and the network, and that your employer's support matters.
Our cost and ROI guide covers the numbers for each route. The next question is what to ask alumni yourself.
What Should You Ask Alumni Before You Join?
Before you join an executive MBA from IIM, ask two or three alumni of the exact programme, not only the best-known one. Their answers will tell you more than any brochure.
- How many hours did you sleep in the first two terms?
- How did your family manage, and what did you wish you had planned?
- How was your study group chosen, and what did you do when it did not work?
- What did you give up during the year that you did not expect?
- Which month was the hardest, and what helped you get through it?
- How did you manage your health, sleep and exercise?
- Would you pick the same route, residential or blended, if you started again?
Residential vs Blended: A Day Side by Side
The table sets the executive MBA daily routine of both routes side by side.
| What you compare | One year residential | Two year blended |
|---|---|---|
| Where you spend the day | On campus | At your job, then online |
| Class slots | Set by the programme each term | Thu–Sat 6.30–9.30 pm and Sunday morning |
| Break from work | Full year | None, but leave for campus week |
| Time on campus | The whole year | One week each term |
