IIT Kanpur Admission Overview 2027
IIT Kanpur admission follows one route for undergraduates and several routes for postgraduates. The IIT Kanpur admission 2027 route is the same as in 2026 until new brochures arrive. For the B.Tech and B.S., you take JEE Main, then JEE Advanced, then JoSAA counselling. For the M.Tech., M.Sc., M.Des. and MBA, the entry exam differs by course. The IIT Kanpur admission process for the Ph.D. is a department interview.

IIT Kanpur admission eligibility for the B.Tech and B.S. is set by JEE Advanced and JoSAA. You need a place in the top 2,50,000 of JEE Main successful candidates. The JEE Advanced rules also apply, and these IIT Kanpur admission requirements are from the 2026 cycle. The tabs below carry the 2026 rules, the latest published.
- Age: born on or after 1 October 2001. SC, ST and PwD candidates get five years of relaxation.
- Attempts: a maximum of two times in two consecutive years.
- Class 12: first appearance in 2025 or 2026, with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.
- Marks: 75% in Class 12, or 65% for SC, ST and PwD, or a place in your board's top 20 percentile.
- Earlier IIT seat: you must not have been admitted to an IIT before. The JEE Advanced website lists a few exceptions.
JEE Advanced 2027 Rules Will Update the Dates
The age limit and the Class 12 year will move forward by one year in the JEE Advanced 2027 brochure. Read that brochure on jeeadv.ac.in when it comes out.
What Are the IIT Kanpur Admission Requirements for PG Courses?
You need a bachelor's degree with at least 55% marks or a CPI of 5.5, and the entrance score for your course:
- M.Tech. and M.S. (Research): a valid GATE score.
- M.Sc.: a valid JAM score.
- M.Des.: a valid CEED score.
- MBA: a valid CAT score.
Departments may add their own requirements. Candidates from SC and ST categories who hold the qualifying degree can apply whatever the marks, as per the institute's eligibility note.
Is There a GATE Waiver for the IIT Kanpur M.Tech.?
Yes, for graduates of the four-year B.Tech or B.S. at an IIT with a CPI of 6.5 overall and 8.0 in the last two years. Sponsored, part-time and external candidates can also get a waiver in some departments. The M.Tech. page of the institute lists the department rules.

GATE 2027 is organised by IIT Madras. Its registration with a late fee is open until 12 October 2026. JAM 2027 registration runs until 19 October 2026. IIT Kanpur also runs its own online entrance test for its online programmes.

For the PG courses, the IIT Kanpur admission procedure starts on the admission portal when each cycle opens. The M.Tech. is open twice a year, for the July and December semesters. The call comes in March or April and again in September. The application fee in the July 2026 cycle was ₹500 for General, EWS and OBC candidates. It was ₹250 for SC, ST and DAP candidates. It was waived for foreign nationals.

IIT Kanpur admission seats are allotted by JoSAA in five rounds. After each round, you choose to freeze, float or slide your seat. The seat acceptance fee includes a JoSAA processing charge of ₹5,000. The rest of the fee is adjusted against the institute admission fee.

IIT Kanpur admission runs on JoSAA, with two small seat channels that the institute handles itself. There is no management quota or direct entry against payment.
A few seats in B.Tech BSBE, CSE and Intelligent Systems, and in the B.S. programmes in Chemistry, Economics, Mathematics and Scientific Computing, Physics, and Statistics and Data Science. You need to qualify in a national or international Olympiad and clear a computer-based test.
In 2026 the portal ran from 25 May to 15 June, and the test was on 24 June 2026. The registration fee was ₹3,200, or ₹1,600 for female, SC, ST and PwD candidates.
Which IIT Gives Direct Admission?
No IIT sells direct admission. At IIT Kanpur, both channels above need a qualifying result and a test, and every other B.Tech and B.S. seat goes through JoSAA.

The four-year IIT Kanpur B.Tech costs ₹10,46,885 for a General, OBC or EWS student, and the UG median package of ₹21,70,000 is about twice that. The fee is from the IIT Kanpur fees page and covers the 2026-27 session. It includes tuition, hostel-side and mess charges, one-time charges and a refundable deposit of ₹26,000. The package is the median for the four-year UG batch of 2024-25 on the IIT Kanpur placements page. The two figures are from different batches, so use the comparison as a guide. How Long Does It Take to Recover the IIT Kanpur B.Tech Fee?
The fee equals about 5.8 months of the median package, before tax and living cost. That is ₹10,46,885 divided by ₹21,70,000, multiplied by 12 months. Tuition alone, at ₹8,00,000 for eight semesters, equals about 4.4 months. This assumes one year of the stated pay, with no tax, no living cost and no loan interest, so it is a rough guide only. A student who pays ₹2,38,885, the fee for SC, ST, PwD and family income below ₹1 lakh, recovers it in about 1.3 months of the same median.
Who Gets a Good Return From IIT Kanpur and Who Does Not?
The return is strong for students who take a campus placement and weaker for those who do not. Of 1,205 graduating students in 2024-25, 855 were placed and 257 chose higher studies. NIRF does not say what the other 93 students did. The UG median also moved between batches, from ₹23,00,000 in 2022-23 to ₹19,40,000 in 2023-24 and ₹21,70,000 in 2024-25. IIT Kanpur publishes no branch-wise pay, so your branch can change the real figure.
