Scoring 95 percentile in JEE Mains can open up admission opportunities in various engineering colleges. Explore your expected All India Rank (AIR), college options, eligible courses and admission chances based on your percentile. Understand what a 95 percentile score means for your engineering career.

95 Percentile in JEE Mains

In JEE Main 2026, about 78,000 candidates scored a 95 percentile in JEE Mains or higher. Only about 16,000 of them scored a 99 percentile or higher, which is the top 1%. A 95 percentile rank and a 99 percentile rank are about 62,000 places apart, and that distance decides which colleges you can choose.

A 95 percentile in JEE Main rank is between about 63,000 and 78,000 in the Common Rank List (CRL), which is the all-India rank list. The exact rank depends on the decimal: 95.00 gave about 78,000, and 95.99 gave about 63,000. This rank is good enough for JEE Advanced and for seats at NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded colleges. It is not good enough for computer science at any NIT through the Other State quota.

A smaller rank number is better. A seat is open to you when your rank number is equal to or smaller than the seat's closing rank. This rule applies to every college list in this article.

You have two JEE Main sessions in 2027, in January and April, and your better score counts. Session 1 is a real attempt, and it also shows what to fix before Session 2.

95 Percentile in JEE Mains Rank: What the 2026 List Shows

What rank do you get with a 95 percentile in JEE Mains?

A 95.00 percentile gave a CRL rank of about 78,400 in 2026, and a 95.99 percentile gave about 63,000, so a 95 percentile in JEE Mains means a rank anywhere in between. The table shows the 95 percentile in JEE Mains rank at each step.

PercentileCRL rank, 2026
9916,015
97.441,138
96.0462,057
95.5270,011
95.00about 78,356
94.5086,063
93.491,01,370
90.521,47,272

You can estimate your own rank. Take (100 minus your percentile) per cent of all candidates. For a 95 percentile that is 5 per cent, and in 2026, 5 per cent of 15.3 lakh candidates is about 76,500. The actual list gave 78,356. One percentile point is worth about 15,300 ranks. If 2027 has more candidates, the same 95 percentile in JEE Mains rank will be a higher number.

Does your category change the rank at a 95 percentile in JEE Mains?

Yes, because EWS, OBC-NCL, SC and ST candidates with a 95 percentile in JEE Mains also get a category rank. It is far lower than the CRL rank. OPEN seats use the CRL rank. Category seats use the category rank.

CategoryApproximate category rankAt percentile
EWS11,53595.08
OBC-NCL24,75895.03
SC2,74895.21

The SC rank matters most here. In Round 5, SC closing ranks for Other State computer science seats were 4,145 at NIT Srinagar and 4,028 at NIT Agartala. They were 4,080 at NIT Uttarakhand and 4,360 at NIT Meghalaya. An SC rank near 3,000 is smaller than those closing ranks, so those seats were open at that rank.

EWS and OBC-NCL ranks at the same percentile are larger numbers than the closing ranks of these seats, so those seats were not open. The EWS closing ranks for these seats ran up to 5,612, and OBC-NCL closing ranks ran up to 11,235. Check your own category rank on your NTA scorecard before you build a college list.

95 Marks in JEE Mains Percentile: How Many Marks Do You Need?

How many marks is a 95 percentile in JEE Mains?

A 95 percentile in JEE Mains needed roughly 99 to 137 marks out of 300 in the 2026 shifts. The range depends on how hard the shift was. A tough paper needs fewer marks for the same percentile, because NTA calculates percentile inside each shift. So the 95 marks in JEE Mains percentile is not one fixed number.

Treat the marks as an estimate

NTA does not publish a table of marks against percentile. The 99 to 137 range is for the 2026 shifts, and the 95 marks in JEE Mains percentile will change with the paper.

The paper has 75 questions, with +4 for a correct answer and −1 for a wrong one, as per the JEE Main exam pattern. Two candidates in different shifts can both score a 95 percentile in JEE Mains, yet one answers nine more questions correctly. In a tough shift, 27 correct and 9 wrong answers give 99 marks. In an easy shift, 36 correct and 7 wrong answers give 137 marks.

Is 95 marks in JEE Mains the same as a 95 percentile?

No, 95 marks gives about a 94 to 95 percentile in a tough shift, and a much lower percentile in an easy shift. In the toughest 2026 shifts, a 95 percentile needed about 99 marks, so 95 marks falls just short of it. The 95 marks in JEE Mains percentile therefore depends on your shift.

Do not plan around one number. Use the 95 marks in JEE Mains percentile only as a rough guide, and aim for the full range of 99 to 137 marks. If you score 95 marks, check your 95 marks in JEE Mains percentile on the scorecard once the result is out.

Is a 95 Percentile in JEE Mains Good Enough?

Is a 95 percentile in JEE Mains a good score or a disappointing one?

A 95 percentile in JEE Mains is a strong score, because only about 5 in 100 of the 15.3 lakh candidates in 2026 were ahead of you. Roughly 14.5 lakh candidates scored the same or less. Your family and friends may still ask about one college by name, so judge a 95 percentile in JEE Mains by the seat it gets you, not by the number alone.

That is why the closing ranks matter more than the percentile. NIT Tiruchirappalli closed computer science at 1,373 for Other State seats in 2026, which is far from a rank near 70,000. Carry the lists of best colleges for 95 percentile in JEE Mains to the family discussion, and you can show what each rank actually opens.

Can you get an IIT with a 95 percentile in JEE Mains?

Not directly, because IIT seats go by JEE Advanced rank, and JEE Main only decides whether you can appear. Only the top 2.5 lakh candidates qualify to appear. In 2026, the General category needed a JEE Main percentile of 93.41 to appear in JEE Advanced, as per NTA. A 95 percentile in JEE Mains clears it by about 1.6 percentile points.

That margin is about 25,000 ranks. The 2027 cutoff will be announced after the results. See the JEE Advanced exam page for the eligibility rules, and how JEE Advanced marks convert to rank to see what your Advanced score will mean.

Can you get an NIT with a 95 percentile in JEE Mains?

Yes, a 95 percentile in JEE Mains can get an NIT, mostly through the Home State quota. The branches are mostly Mechanical, Civil and Chemical. Home State quota is only for candidates whose Home State is the state of the NIT, as decided by the State Code of Eligibility in JoSAA.

Other State seats are much harder at this rank, and the lists below give the exact seats. The list of NITs in India helps you see which state each NIT sits in.

Is a 95 percentile in JEE Mains good for computer science?

A 95 percentile in JEE Mains can get computer science at GFTIs, and at IIIT Senapati if your rank is about 67,500 or smaller. It cannot get computer science at any NIT through the Other State quota. The last Other State computer science seat at an NIT closed at rank 43,239, at NIT Manipur. Your rank of 63,000 to 78,000 is a larger number, so those seats were not open. The exceptions are Home State seats at NIT Puducherry (65,630) and NIT Agartala (81,209).

The top NITs closed at much smaller rank numbers. NIT Tiruchirappalli closed computer science at 1,373, NIT Karnataka Surathkal at 1,954 and NIT Warangal at 2,581 for Other State candidates.

Do your Class 12 marks matter for JoSAA?

Yes, JoSAA 2026 needed 75% in Class 12, or a place in your board's top 20 percentile. SC, ST and PwD candidates needed 65%. This applies to NITs, IIITs and GFTIs, as per the . You also needed to appear for Class 12 for the first time in 2024, 2025 or 2026.

Check the rule for your year when JoSAA 2027 opens. A 95 percentile in JEE Mains does not waive the Class 12 rule. Keep your Class 12 marksheet details ready before choice filling starts.

Best Colleges for 95 Percentile in JEE Mains: JoSAA 2026 Round 5

The best colleges for 95 percentile in JEE Mains, judged by the seats a 95 percentile rank could reach in Round 5, were Home State seats at several NITs, IIIT Senapati and a group of GFTIs. All ranks below are OPEN, gender-neutral closing ranks from Round 5 of JoSAA 2026, as published on josaa.nic.in. A closing rank is the last rank that received a seat, and a smaller rank number is better.

How to read these closing ranks

Quota: HS is Home State, OS is Other State and AI is All India. NITs use HS and OS. IIITs and GFTIs mostly use AI.

Rank type: OPEN seats use the CRL rank. EWS, OBC-NCL, SC and ST seats use category ranks, which are lower numbers.

Female-only seats: JoSAA also keeps female-only seats at NITs and some IIITs. Their closing ranks differ from the gender-neutral ranks here, so check them on the JoSAA page.

Round: Round 5 was the last round. Vacant seats move to CSAB special rounds, so a seat that closed at a given rank is not a promise for 2027.

Which NITs can you get in the Home State quota?

The widest NIT choice for a 95 percentile in JEE Mains is in the Home State quota, with closing ranks from 65,630 to 81,209. These seats are open only to candidates from that NIT's state. Find your own state first, because that row is the one closest to you.

Which NITs have Other State seats near a 95 percentile in JEE Mains?

Only a few Civil and bio-related seats at north-eastern NITs closed near 63,000 to 65,000 for Other State candidates. These seats suit only the top of the 95 percentile in JEE Mains band: a rank of about 65,000 or smaller, roughly a 95.9 percentile or higher.

Which IIITs can you get with a 95 percentile in JEE Mains?

IIIT Senapati Manipur is the main IIIT among the best colleges for 95 percentile in JEE Mains. Its computer science specialisations closed between 63,321 and 67,545. IIIT seats are All India quota, so your home state does not matter for these colleges with 95 percentile in JEE Mains.

The plain computer science seat at IIIT Senapati closed at 59,813, which a 95 percentile in JEE Mains rank of 63,000 or more does not reach. IIIT Kalyani, IIIT Bhagalpur and IIIT Agartala closed computer science between 47,762 and 50,027. That is about 15,000 ranks ahead of the Senapati specialisations, and a percentile near 96.7 to 96.9.

Which GFTIs can you get with a 95 percentile in JEE Mains?

Among colleges with 95 percentile in JEE Mains, GFTIs give the widest computer science choice, with closing ranks from 63,644 to 75,802. A GFTI is a government funded technical institute that takes candidates through JoSAA. These seats are All India quota.

A closing rank shows whether a seat was available, not how good the placements are. The best colleges for 95 percentile in JEE Mains differ by branch, so read the placement report of the institute and the branch before you lock a seat.

Alternate Options If Your Rank Misses Your Preferred Seat

Do Freeze, Float and Slide help if you want a better seat later?

Yes, Float and Slide let you accept a seat now and stay in line for a better one. If your 95 percentile in JEE Mains rank gets a seat that is not your first choice, use one of them. They are not available in the last round, so the choice you make before the last round matters.

You accept the seat and leave the process. The seat stays with you, and you are not considered in later rounds.

Rejecting a higher-preference seat that Float or Slide offers cancels your seat as well. Decide before you tick the option.

Can you wait for the CSAB special rounds?

Yes, CSAB runs special rounds that fill seats left vacant at NITs, IIITs and GFTIs after JoSAA ends. The official site is csab.nic.in. Vacant seats are not guaranteed, and the closing ranks in these rounds can be higher or lower than in JoSAA. Special rounds add more colleges with 95 percentile in JEE Mains to your options only if seats stay vacant, so treat them as a backup, not a plan.

Does state counselling give more options at a 95 percentile in JEE Mains?

Yes, because some states use the JEE Main rank for seats in their own engineering colleges. Haryana is one: HSTES admits to B.E. and B.Tech on the All India Rank of JEE Main, as per hstes.org.in. Each state sets its own domicile rule, fee and seat list, so read your state's official counselling site. State seats add more colleges with 95 percentile in JEE Mains to your list. Compare their closing ranks with the JoSAA lists above before you decide.

Can You Improve a 95 Percentile in JEE Main 2027?

Yes, you can lift a 95 percentile in JEE Mains, because JEE Main 2027 has two sessions. Your best NTA score decides the final rank. Going from 95 to 99 percentile is four percentile points, and it moves your rank by about 62,000 places, from 78,356 to 16,015. The table shows what each step in percentile reached in Round 5 of 2026.

99.0016,015CSE at IIIT Guwahati (25,246)

Closing ranks change every year, so rebuild your list of best colleges for 95 percentile in JEE Mains when JoSAA 2027 publishes its ranks. The jump from 95 to 97.4 is the one that changes your options most. It takes you from GFTI and Home State seats to the last Other State computer science seats at NITs. That is about 37,000 ranks for 2.4 percentile points.

What does the top 1% get that a 95 percentile does not?

The top 1% means a 99 percentile or higher, which was a CRL rank of about 16,000 or smaller in 2026. At that rank, you could get computer science at NITs outside your home state. NIT Uttarakhand closed at rank 22,140 and NIT Srinagar at 27,594 for Other State seats. IIIT Guwahati closed at 25,246 and takes candidates from all states.

A 95 percentile in JEE Mains rank of 63,000 to 78,000 is 47,000 to 62,000 places away from those seats. Treat it as a stretch target for Session 2, and keep your 95 percentile seats as your safe list.

How should you handle negative marking if you aim for the top 1%?

Attempt a question only when you are more than 20% sure of the answer, because a correct answer gives +4 and a wrong answer takes away 1. Above 20%, you gain marks on average. Below it, you lose them. This is arithmetic from the marking scheme, not a guarantee.

A blind guess among four options is 25% sure, so it gains very little and can lose marks in one paper. Remove two wrong options first, and your chance becomes 50%, which gives an average gain of 1.5 marks. Numerical-value questions have no options, so a blind guess there almost always loses 1 mark. Wrong answers also pull down the 95 marks in JEE Mains percentile you expect.

When can you try again for a higher percentile?

JEE Main 2027 gives you two chances, in January and April, and Session 1 registration closes on 22 November 2026. The dates are as per the .

  1. 24 October to 22 November 2026

    Session 1 registration window

Last date to register for Session 1.

  2. 20 to 24 January and 28 January 2027

    Session 1 exam

    Papers on six days.

  3. 2 to 7 April 2027

    Session 2 exam

Appear in both sessions if you want a second try.

Use Session 1 as the first full test of a 95 percentile in JEE Mains target, then use the weeks before Session 2 on the topics where you lost marks. Check the JEE Main syllabus so that no chapter is left out.

Questions Students Ask About a 95 Percentile

Is percentile the same as percentage in JEE Main?

No, a 95 percentile in JEE Mains means you scored equal to or more than 95 per cent of the candidates in your shift. It is not 95 per cent of the marks.

Do girls have separate seats in JoSAA?

Yes, JoSAA keeps female-only seats at IITs, NITs and some IIITs, and their closing ranks differ from the gender-neutral ranks in this guide. Check the female-only rows on the JoSAA opening and closing rank page for your branch and your 95 percentile in JEE Mains rank.

What is the difference between an opening rank and a closing rank?

The opening rank is the first rank that received the seat, and the closing rank is the last. Use the closing rank to check if you can get a seat, because the opening rank only shows the best-ranked candidate who took it.
