Why do MBA exam names carry different years?

Most MBA entrance exams name themselves by their own cycle, not by the admission year. SNAP 2026 is held in December 2026. XAT 2027 is held in January 2027. Both lead to the same 2027 intake. Read the test date, not the number in the name.

So which of these MBA entrance exams matter most, and how many are there in all?

Types of MBA Entrance Exams in India

MBA entrance exams in India differ in who runs them, who accepts them and how often they are held.

How many MBA entrance exams are there in India?

There is no fixed count of MBA entrance exams in India. Around ten to fifteen are in regular use, but six or seven national tests decide most admissions. The exams for MBA entrance fall into four groups:

  • National exams: CAT, XAT, NMAT by GMAC, CMAT and MAT. Hundreds of institutes accept scores from these MBA entrance exams.
  • Institute-level exams: SNAP for Symbiosis programmes.
  • State exams: MAH-MBA/MMS CET in Maharashtra, TANCET in Tamil Nadu, TS ICET and AP ICET in the Telugu states, KMAT in Kerala and PGCET in Karnataka. These are the usual route to seats in state government and state university colleges.
  • International tests: GMAT and GRE, which a few Indian programmes accept.

Most applicants take two or three MBA entrance exams, not one. That works because many institutes accept more than one score. The next section looks at the top MBA entrance exams one by one.

Top MBA Entrance Exams in India for 2026–27

These are the top MBA entrance exams in India by the number of seats and institutes behind them. Open each tab for dates, pattern and what to expect from each MBA entrance exam.

Test day: 29 November 2026. Admit cards download from 4 November 2026.

Pattern: three sections, 40 minutes each, 120 minutes in all. The sections are verbal ability and reading comprehension, data interpretation and logical reasoning, and quantitative ability.

Eligibility: a bachelor's degree with at least 50% marks (45% for SC, ST and PwBD candidates). Final-year students can apply.

Status: registration for CAT 2026 has closed. If you missed it, your next CAT chance is CAT 2027. Read the CAT 2026 registration guide and the CAT exam pattern to see what you are preparing for.

How do the top MBA entrance exams compare?

The table puts the pattern and marking of the top mba entrance exams side by side.

ExamFormatMarking
CAT3 sections, 40 minutes eachNegative marking on MCQs, none on typed answers
XATAbout 95 questions, 3 hours0.25 off per wrong answer
NMATComputer adaptiveNo negative marking
SNAP60 questions, 60 minutes0.25 off per wrong answer
CMAT100 questions, 180 minutes+4 right, −1 wrong
MAT150 questions, 120 minutes0.25 off per wrong answer
MAH CET200 questions, 150 minutesNo negative marking

Five of these seven MBA entrance exams take marks away for wrong answers. NMAT and MAH CET do not.

How does negative marking change your score?

Negative marking turns a wild guess into a real cost. Take SNAP. Say you attempt 40 of 60 questions and get 32 right and 8 wrong. Your score is 32 minus 2, which is 30. Now take CMAT. Say you attempt 60 questions, with 45 right and 15 wrong. You get 180 marks for the right answers and lose 15, so your score is 165 out of 400.

XAT adds one more rule. You can skip up to 8 questions without penalty. After that, each skipped question costs 0.1 marks. Skip 12 and the last 4 cost you 0.4 marks.

Knowing the marking is half the battle. The other half is picking the exam that fits you.

Which MBA Entrance Exam Should You Take?

Choose your MBA entrance exams by the colleges you want, not by what your friends are taking. Treat your list of MBA entrance exams as a portfolio, with one reach exam and one safer exam. The tabs below match common goals to exams.

Take CAT. The IIMs use it for their flagship programmes. Add XAT as a second shot, since it falls five weeks after CAT and has a different applicant pool.

Which MBA entrance exam is easy?

No MBA entrance exam is easy, because the competition sets the difficulty, not the paper. So when students ask which MBA entrance exam is easy, the honest answer is that the easiest paper is not always the safest bet. A simple paper just means more people score high, so the cutoff rises. CAT draws the largest and strongest pool. CMAT and MAT papers usually feel gentler, but the cutoffs at good colleges stay high.

What is a percentile, and why does it matter?

Each of the top MBA entrance exams reports a percentile, though how it is worked out differs. A percentile tells you how many test-takers you beat. A 95 percentile means you scored better than 95 out of every 100 candidates. Colleges shortlist on this number, not on raw marks.

This is where normalisation comes in. MBA entrance exams held in several sessions use different papers. Normalisation adjusts scores so an easy session and a hard session can be compared fairly. SNAP is the exception. It takes your best raw score from up to three tests without normalising.

Can you take more than one MBA entrance exam?

Yes, and most serious applicants take several MBA entrance exams. A sensible plan for this cycle is CAT on 29 November, SNAP in December and XAT on 3 January. If CAT is not an option for you, swap it for NMAT, which closes soon. The cost of extra exams for MBA entrance is a few thousand rupees per attempt. The gain is more than one shot at a shortlist.

But can you even sit these MBA entrance exams? MBA entrance exam eligibility is the next filter.

MBA Entrance Exam Eligibility and Fees

MBA entrance exam eligibility starts with a bachelor's degree in any discipline. Most exams for MBA entrance then differ on minimum marks.

ExamDegree neededFinal-year students
CAT50% marks (45% for SC, ST, PwBD)Can apply
XATDegree of at least three yearsCan apply
SNAPGraduate, usually 50% (45% for SC, ST)If the programme allows
MATGraduation in any disciplineCan sit provisionally

Always check MBA entrance exam eligibility in the official bulletin for the final rule. Individual colleges often ask for more than the exam does.

On fees, most national MBA entrance exams charge roughly ₹2,000 to ₹3,500 per attempt, plus taxes. SNAP adds a separate programme fee, and SNAP fees are not refundable. Check the refund rule of each MBA entrance exam, and your target colleges, before you pay.

Check each MBA entrance exam date against its registration deadline. Use the CAT 2026 dates page to track CAT result and counselling updates.

Clearing the test is only the first gate, though. What happens after it?

After the Exam: Shortlist, Group Discussion and Personal Interview

For most MBA entrance exams in India, your score gets you a shortlist, not a seat. Colleges then call you for a group discussion, a personal interview or both. A group discussion tests how you listen and build on other people's points. A personal interview tests your reasons for doing an MBA and your study or work record. Some colleges add a written ability test.

Symbiosis shows how this works. The final merit score is out of 100. The SNAP score is scaled to 50 marks, the group exercise carries 10 and the personal interview carries 40. So a strong personal interview can lift a modest score. Keep the admit card and scorecard safe, because colleges ask for both at the later stages.

Prepare early. Practise a group discussion with friends once a week from December. Write down your reasons for choosing an MBA before the interview calls come. Both steps matter as much as the MBA entrance exams themselves.

If you cannot or will not sit an exam at all, are there other routes?

MBA Without Entrance Exam: What Is Really Possible

An mba without entrance exam is possible, but the options are narrower than most listings suggest. Here are the main routes for students who skip MBA entrance exams.

RouteWho it suitsWhat to check
Direct admission at private universitiesGraduates with decent marksApproval status and placements
Profile-based shortlistingCandidates with work experienceWhether an interview replaces the test
Online or distance MBAWorking professionalsRecognition by the UGC's distance education bureau
Foreign universitiesStudents planning to study abroadGMAT or GRE need, plus visa costs

Not every seat is open without a score

Seats in the flagship IIM programmes and in Symbiosis MBA programmes are given through CAT and SNAP. Do not pay a fee to anyone who promises these seats without a score.

Can you get into a good college with an MBA without entrance exam?

Yes, but even an MBA without entrance exam rarely reaches the best-known colleges, which almost always ask for a score. IIFT is one example: its MBA (International Business) for working professionals asks for a CAT, XAT, CMAT, ATMA, MAT or GMAT score. So the mba without entrance exam route works best at private universities and institutes that run their own selection.

Is an MBA without entrance exam valid?

An MBA without entrance exam is valid if the institute and the degree are recognised. A university degree needs UGC recognition. A PGDM or MBA at a technical institute needs AICTE approval. An online or distance MBA needs approval from the UGC's distance education bureau. Check each on the official portal, not on the college's own brochure.

Before you pick a no-exam route, ask one more question. What percentile did last year's admitted batch hold, and does the college publish it? A college that cannot answer is telling you something.

How to Plan Your Preparation Until January 2027

Your plan for these MBA entrance exams depends on where you start. Open the one that matches you.

You are taking CAT on 29 November

Take one full mock each week. Spend the next day on your mistakes. Keep the last three days for revision, not new topics. Add XAT's decision-making practice in December, and start group discussion and personal interview practice in January.

You are skipping CAT

Aim for SNAP in December and XAT on 3 January. SNAP rewards speed, since it gives one minute per question. XAT rewards judgement in decision making. Pick your MBA entrance exam date early, because SNAP dates and cities are given first come, first served.
