Overview

Product design is all about creating a new product that a business can sell to its customers. Industry, commerce, retail and domestic markets are hungry for new products of all varieties. Every product moves through a development cycle, which the product designer oversees.


This programme aims to produce graduates with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to work in today’s demanding design fields.


The World Economic Forum forecast the most important skills you’ll need in order to be truly valuable for your lifetime in the workforce. At the top of the list are creative problem-solving, social intelligence, complex critical thinking and the ability to be a lifelong learner. Our Product Design course has been equipping students with these skills since 2003.


It’s a dynamic programme, always evolving to reflect changes in the technological and cultural environment and showcasing future possibilities through innovation and design.


Modules include everything from Applied Physics for Design, Creative Design Fundamentals, Design Mathematics, Manufacture & Materials, Innovation in Design and Design Tools & Technology to Management and Strategy, Product Visualisation, Prototyping & Modelmaking, and Product Development Studio.


Our sought-after graduates go on to work in a wide array of industries, including medical devices, agri-tech, automotive, sports technology, strategic service design, user experience design, toy and game design, and many more.


Study Abroad Opportunities

In Year 3, you can undertake a full semester at an international partner university such as San Francisco State University, UPC in Barcelona, or Hong Kong PolyU.


If you qualify with a BSc (Product Design) Degree, you’re eligible for full membership of the Institution of Engineering Designers.

Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin) is Ireland’s first Technological University, offering a unique range of programmes and disciplines, with pathways to graduation from foundation and apprenticeship to undergraduate and doctoral levels. TU Dublin is the University where the arts, business, sciences, engineering and technology converge, and its 28,500 students and researchers come from all over Ireland and from all parts of the globe. TU Dublin has well-developed campuses in Dublin City and in the two largest areas of population growth in the Greater Dublin Region – Blanchardstown and Tallaght. Now, a new campus is being developed on a spectacular 73-acre site at Grangegorman in central Dublin. This is the largest higher education development project in Europe. The campus will provide an exceptional learning environment that supports research, innovation, and the advancement of knowledge and will welcome more than 10,000 students in September 2020. A further 5,000 students will relocate to the campus by 2022.

Aungier Street campus is built on the site as the former Jacob’s factory a historical site in Dublin 2, within a short walking distance of St Stephens Green and is extremely accessible by public transport from both sides of the city.


The campus extends 25,833 sqm (278,064sq ft) in total and accommodates 5,000 students. The campus houses the largest business school in Ireland. The campus is close to the Green Luas line stop at St Stephen’s Green. A range of cross-city Dublin Bus routes stop outside the campus, including the 15, 16, 140, 83, 122, 68. In 2023 the activity on this campus is scheduled to move across the Liffey to our flagship campus at Grangegorman.
